I've never brazed and only soldered a couple bolsters -- and not all
that well either. I'd like to make a hidden tang with threaded rod attached for the end cap. I'd sure appreciate any advice on this, no matter how basic it is. Thanks.

I saw once where a maker used a threaded collar and pins instead of welding or brazing the rod onto the tang. Get or make a threaded collar the same size as the threaded rod you're using. Run the rod in about half way and drill and pin it. Now cut a slot in the other end of the collar that the tang of the knife will fit into. Drill and pin it to the tang. The way I saw it done, the joint between the collar and tang were left a little lose so the assembley could be angled to go thru a piece of antler and come out in the center of the butt end.

A guy in Backwoodsman magazine had a similar problem.

He took a bolt and cut the head off then took a saw or dremel tool and cut a slot for the tang to fit into. Then he drilled two holes through the tang and bolt then pinned the two together.
Make sure you slide the guard on first.

Hope that didnt confuse you too much.

alot has alredy been writen about tang extentions so you might want to look in the archives.

or try this.

bevel both sides of the tang end.
file a "V" groove in the rod mated to the tang end
coat end of rod and tang with flux
place a small piece of hard solder on the flux at the jount.
heat with torch untill solder flows
allow to cool

hard solder and silver brase are the same (melting point 1400 deg)
If blade has been heat treated wrap it in a wet rag to protect it.
I keep the work on fire bricks doing the hot work between them

I use a simple propane torch. It is not hard, it just requires practice.

have fun Eric
