Hello, i want to grind down my bali so that it has no edge or point, so then i can use it in public and at school... But would this knife still get me arrested? What is the definition of "knife", cause i don't want to get arrested... Thanks for any help : )-

Generally, realistic "fake" weapons are just as illegal as real ones.

Schools are an especially sensitive areas. Recently, one boy was expelled for "making a gesture with his hand to suggest a gun and saying 'bang'". Another boy was expelled for bringing a gun to school... the gun in question being about one inch long, made of plastic, and in the company of the boys new GI Joe Action Figure.

There is no way to make a balisong legal that I know of.The only thing I can think of is to replace the real blade with one of the cheesy "rubber" blades that were sold as toy balisongs back in the 80's.
If you can find one of the toy balisongs, they do work well for practice knives...but only if you put the blade into some metal handles.I used to have a pair of handles from a cheapie that died (someone gave them to me),and I got one of the toy knives.I put the handles on that toy blade and used it to teach newbies how to handle the balisong without them ever getting cut.Surprisingly, the knife was very well balanced.

I just don't get why a peice of metal with hinges and handles is considered a knife, if it can't cut jack. I bring my bali to school anyway, i just want to be able to swing it in school...-

Dud, you are in WA where they are illegal anyway, your most likly a minor (unless you leaving HS or in college) and you want to bring a weapon in when, according to almost all town and school rules, they are a no-no.

Bud, leave it at home and practice there. if you want to show all your freinds how cool your bali-skills are, invite them over and practive in the living room.

If you need to cut at school, get a leatherman micra and be cool. No reason to face all those people with legal backing telling you no.

Play it safe, be smart, and don't piss off the people who, due to age and authority can indeed make decisions for you.

That might sound harsh, but why make it tough on yourself?

Yeah they are illegal in WA and i'm a minor, and there are rules against having it at school either... I don't need it to cut anything at school, but i like to have it with me to manipulate after school.. I'm not stupid enough to use it at school as it is... See, the purpose of this post is to find out if severly dulling the blade would make it not even legally considered a knife. Then it *would* be legal to have, carry, and manipulate in public, although maybe not school... BTW it's not that i want to show it off or anything, i just like to do it... Thanks for the advice though : )-

Well,as far as most LEO's are concerned,if it has a blade,it's a knife. As far as schools are concerned, even if it's dull,it's a weapon. Therefore,it can cause a lot of trouble...not only for you,but for the rest of us as well, since any trouble with the balisongs can help create more laws against them.

If you want something to do the tricks with, build a wooden version with a completely rounded "blade" on it.No edge,no tip. This you might be able to carry, and it would still show your skills. Otherwise, you're out of luck on all accounts, unless you find a pair of handles and a blade that's been snapped off right where the edge would begin. No blade,no worries.

Bottom line:

There is NOTHING you can do to make a Balisong legal to carry if your state says NO.

Taking it to school is just asking for trouble. You may be smart enough not to flip it in front of everyone, but sometimes things happen beyond your control.

It's just not worth the risk.

Thats pretty good! I was thinking maybe a peice of fdlat bar stock with a rounded end and no shape other that the bar shape it comes in. but their is one more issue, well three really.

1. A "look-A-like" can get you into deep trouble,

2. Even if it could never be considered a knife, it can still be considered a weapon,

3. If you make trouble with a Bali-Song, you make a ton of trouble for us all, and become an example for a PC Crazy person to keep them Baned!

When I was in 5th grade, a girl brought a "Hill-Billy Switchblade" to school. It was three Popsickle sticks, a rubberband, and a cloths pin. Even that will get you expelled today! So just leave it at home, thats the best way to avoid trouble.

Just leave your bali at home. I have a first hand account about how fudged up, and nuts the US public schools are. When I was in the ninth grade (a few years ago) there was a bomb threat, and as usial me and some buddies where standing around talking about where the "bomb" would be. A few cheerleaders overheard this conversation, and started spreading roumors. Before I knew it I was expelled for terroristic threatening. AND I DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING! Now thing about what you're doing. You're bringing an illegal weapon into a no-go zone, and you're thinking about some way you can flash it around. s-t-u-p-i-d Plain, and simple. I leave my balisongs at home, in a leather pouch, and they never leave the house. They never will either. The best place for a weapon in todays America is out of sight. And I don't mean in your pocket, I mean in your home.

This makes me think of that old proverb:
Don't seek the fly, let the fly seek you.
If you don't get it, it means:
Don't go looking for trouble, let trouble find you.
