Help ordering engraved SS Kiwi's

Me and my team of around 12 software developers just completed a mammoth 6 month project during which time, due to contractual commitments, we worked many (many) hours of overtime. Now that the project has gone live, and since I am the resident knife knut, I want to give everybody a gift of thanks. I was thinking of giving everybody a nice knife (spyderco preferred), engraved with the project name and year and a message of thanks. The SS Kiwi seems like it would be great for this gift, unusual enough to stand out (unlike the plethora of SAK's which, although nice, are somewhat pedestrian), very useful, very non-threatening, and still economical enough not to put me in the poor house.

Two things worry me: Is there enough space on the Kiwi's handle to do the engraving? Is the handle too curved to be engraved? Other candidates are the SS Criket, SS Navigator, SS Dragonfly and the SS Jester (although the Jester's actually to "toy like" for my tastes). Wish I could afford to give everybody Evrina Kopas...

So, has anyone done something like this before? Any suggestions as to a good dealer to contact for this kind of an order?

I don't know about the engraving, but I must say I'd be very happy to gt a "thank you" Kiwi from my boss. Very cool stuff.

AFAIK you can buy the knives from anywhere (maybe get a little discount for how many) and then send them to Spyderco to do the engraving. I think there is a $50 set-up fee, but then it's like $5 each knife. I could be wrong though.

Hi enkidu,
Sawyer's Cutlery, who sell on eBay under the name "razorsharpknife" offer just about every all stainless Spyderco, from the Jester to the Police, with the factory "Spyder and web" engraving on the handle. I have never seen a Kiwi among their offerings. This may be mere coincidence, or may signify that the Kiwi, due, as you obseved to its rounded handles, may not be suitable for engraving there.

On the other hand, there is a picture in the 2003 Spyderco dealer catalog showing a jigged bone Kiwi with engraving on the blade, so am sure that would work equally well on the all stainless version. In fact, since the engraving in that picture is done on the concave curve of the hollow ground portion of the blade, it may mean engraving on the convex curve of the handle is possible as well.

The Kiwi is a very nice "gentleman's folder" and one of my favorite knives and agree it would make an excellent gift as it is both tastesful and practical. Because of their experience, Sawyer's would be the first place I would think of contacting if I were in your position.

enkidu,
You shouldn't have any problems with engraving on any of those models. We do it on a regular basis. You'd be amazed at what our engraver has been able to do. :)

Thanks Slvx. I never thought of getting in contact with Spyderco! Duh.

Thanks Deacon. I've emailed Sawyer's Cutlery and I'll call them tomorrow. They don't list the SS Kiwi on their eBay store, but their regular website has it. BTW, your kiwi web page played a part in pushing the kiwi up to the top of the list.

Thanks Kristi. I emailed the retail sales email address with a query about this.

The Kiwi is a great knife. I have many knives and the Kiwi may be the one that gets used the most.

It's amazing what laser engraving can accomplish. Almost anything is possible.

Haha, I think you'll find that Paul is a part of the Spyderco community that we are very lucky to have.
