Well I just picked up my first Busse. A Hell Razor in black krinkle with black magnum scales. I have some questions since I don't know anything about Busse Knives. Any info on these is appreciated.

Is there anything I need to know about maintaining it? Anything else I should know about Busse knives? Where's a good place to pick up a simple sheath (not leather or custom) to fit a Hell Razor? I don't need all the bells and whistles of a Spec-Ops sheath, but if that's all there is, well, that would be OK I guess.

Next, what do most people prefer, regular or magnum scales? I got magnum but I've never held either one. What about scale materials, is it just personal preference or has one kind come out on top?

Next, can someone explain to me why someone might prefer a coated blade over satin, and which ones are deemed the best coatings or the most popular?

One last thing, does Busse take orders for a particular configuration and how long do they take to ship?

Thanks alot for filling me in on this "Busse" craze. -G

Spec ops seems to be all I've heard

I like mags on the larger blades

Preference. But I think canvas is in the lead.

Coated is cheaper. :D Only thing I can think of for myself.

Busse will accept orders for the knife on their site. The configurations vary depending on your preference. They ship after 4 months roughly.

The above is just an opinion, not fact and probably is not accurate :D

Congrats on your new score and feel free to stick around a while

Thanks. Does the HR qualify as a "larger blade?" As for the Spec-Ops, does it matter their Combat Master vs their Survival sheath? Other folks still feel free to chime in, I'm enjoying learning about this line of knives.

Not sure which sheath the guys I talked with picked. As for larger, it's borderline. I would classify the HR as a medium sized busse. But I know there are guys out there who love the mag handles on everything :D

Of course, the only mag handles I've held to date was on a fatty MOASH. So I am limited in handling experience :D

For me it's deffinately magnums on Hell Razor and BM. You can always remove some of the thickness of a magnum handle to fit your hand better, not so with regular scales which are very thin to begin with. Micarta or G10, either one I'll be happy with.

I've got on my SFNO's the flat scales and the magnum scales. I like the magnums much more. I also just received a Hell Razor with magnums. As for the sheath, I would go for a spec ops. They are really nice.
And congrats on your first Busse!

So what can I use this thing for? Chopping wood in the absence of a hatchet, or will that damage the edge? I really don't know how far INFI can be pushed.

Welcome to the Busse forum, I'm glad that you stopped by.

Ride it hard and put it away wet, it can handle it ;) Busses are hard use knives, no need to really worry about what you are using it for just use it.....and take pics. Although I would dry it before storing it ;)

I just checked and the Swamp Rat M6 sheath actually fits the HR pretty well, it holds it well and it is a good sheath. It is a simple cordura drop leg with an expandable front pocket. You can see some good pics here http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=424919 and it can be purchased here www.shop.ratknives.com $17.95 plus shipping

:D:D

Nice. What's the difference between an SFNO and a Hell Razor? Are snakeskin scales still available from the factory and are they popular or do they look weird? Finally, where did you get that canted Kydex rig, looks like a nice carry option. Thanks for the info.

Eric thanks for digging up that SR sheath, looks like a good one.

Not really sure what "drop leg" means... :o

I'm thinking about getting one of these for my HR, except all the pics I've seen are of the front, so I'm not entirely sure how I'm supposed to wear/carry it around. Basically, if it's a smart fit (as you say) and it can be carried without hassle, this looks like the thing for me. Any insight would be fantastic.

There's the Spec-Ops Combat Master sheath for $36 as well. No one talks about it though, and lots of people talk about their Survival sheath. That's why I wonder if the Combat Master works just as well as the Survival for this type of knife. It's cheaper, and has most of the same features.

I use the Combat Master sheath for my Satin Jack Tac (SJT). I prefer it over the Survival Sheath because it weighs less. Its smaller pouch still holds my EZ-lap M and fire steel.

I should mention that I have a custom insert for mine which alleviates the need for the thumb strap which just becomes a secondary in case your doing rope work or such.

yeah...looks like the combat master would work for an HR...all the dimensions of the knife to be seem within the parameters of the long version of the sheath.

Hmmmm....(I DO like that coyote brown...)

I use the term "drop leg" to mean that when you are wearing it the sheath drops from your belt and rides along your leg, rather than attach to the belt and ride high along the belt(I call this high ride and I find this more common with kydex sheaths) I hope that helps

Here is the best picture of the back of the sheath that I have

Cool, where did you get the custom insert?

Thanks for the pic  Really solid-looking sheath. For whatever reason, I decided to give the spec ops combat master a shot...hopefully it works out with the HR. I'll post some general impressions when it gets here.

OK my first Busse just arrived (an HR). I can tell it is very strong. My first impression is that I like it very much except for the weight. It seems quite a bit heavier than my other fixed blades and I'm not sure I would want to lug it around. It may just take some getting used to. I can tell the weight is key for chopping and things like that, so I'm sure it is an advantage for what this knife is intended for. I think I would prefer to carry a lighter fixed blade however and a separate (and lighter) hatchet for the wood. I'm curious about your thoughts on this matter.

Also I had heard there were slight variations on the black micarta but I had never heard anyone say the micarta isn't black. Owning many black micarta knives I have to say this "black" micarta ain't black. If anything it's green.

Hey Bali. Congrats on your first piece of INFI and a fine one at that. The HR is a great blade. There was a discussion not to long ago on Busse's micarta variations. From persoal experience, I had an OD w/black mags where the micarta was definitely black. I also had an OD w/ standard black scales where the black had a definite greenish hue. As for the weight, it might be personal prefernce but, I did not find it heavy at all. Might just take some getting used to. I found it to be a decent chopper but, wasn't quie what I was looking for in this department. Since this was primarily what I was using it for, I had to let it go to get something better suited to my needs. Overall though, I would say it's a great blade and I do miss it. Hope you enjoy it and just make sure to snap some pics when you do;)
