It's time to pick up a Spyderedge and I need some help. I'm torn between a first gen Paramilitary, which I might not find, and a Manix 2. It'll be used for EDC, cutting strapping, tape, opening packaging etc. I'm not worried about fine cutting abilities. This knife won't be used for cutting apples or opening the mail.

So what do you think? Anyone have any experiences with these knives? I've tried searching but didn't really find any comparisons between these two. Maybe there's a better option, that's why I've come here for advice.

I think its an apples and oranges thing, and neither is subjectively better. The Paramilitary might feel a little faster and lighter in the hand, and its probably a little thinner in the pocket. But a few days ago I brought out my Manix 2 SE for a while, and its an awesome piece of knife too. It feels a little more beefy and solid in its construction, but is by no means too big in the hand or pocket. And that SE edge will just rip through everything from cardboard to clamshells with such ease that it almost make you giggle. The Manix 2 SE is easy to find, as well. You just gotta pick what you think you will like the best and get the most utility and enjoyment from, because neither is "better" than the other. Both will flick open like magic, and both lock configurations are solid performers. They are just different. Btw, I find that a SpyderEdge will handle the fine cutting tasks easily as well, from peeling an apple to sharpening a pencil. From my EDC perspective, the only area it lacks, relative to a plain edge, is that the SE will be a little zig zaggy when opening a letter.

Manix 2 SE.

Consider also the Endura:

Coming back to the OP, any of those two knives will do. However, considering you won't need a knife for delicate work and it will have serrations, I'd rather pick a hollow grind therefore the Manix.

i would recommend getting one of spyderco's H1 steel models for the serrated edge. from my understanding, H1 work hardens and because of the extra grinding for the serrations, the performance of serrated H1 is suppose to be excellent. my vote goes to the pacific salt.

The rescue model comes to mind .

Great knife for the tasks described .

I actually started by looking at the rescues, then the Salts. The H1 sounds like the way to go with serrations. Then I started thinking I wanted a g10 handle with screws, but still serrations. And now here we are. I do like the idea of the Manix's sturdiness.

I really like the Native FRN with serrations, always the best value Spydie. G-10 seems to add $30-50 at times and main difference is at home stroking the handle, not when using it.
