Hey all,
I am new to the forum and was just wondering if anyone had some good suggestions for a durable EDC that is affordable (under $150). I am looking for a knife that will stand up to daily use whether it is when I'm hiking or when I'm home and working around the house. I currently use my Kershaw Cryo or Spycerco Tenacious. I have no preference on blade length. I am open to any suggestions and appreciate your responses in advance.

-Also I have yet to buy a Benchmade Griptilian, can anyone tell me how these hold up? And which models they like most?

thanks,
BB

I would recommend a spyderco paramilitary 2 or a manix 2. I also really like my boker federal, but the spydercos would probably make for a better edc.

Just about any Spyderco or Benchmade in that price range that strikes your fancy.

If you had a few parameters on what your looking for we might be of more help :D

But ill take a few stabs at it anyway....

Big and Tough - Benchmade Rift or Emerson
Middle Size - Spyderco PM2
Small and Light - Benchmade 531 or Spyderco Native

Those are some of the ones I used to carry around that price range....Im kinda a sucker for BM's Axis locks...

Manix 2 gets my vote. It's a lot like the Tenacious except much nicer. I have a little seat time with the Tenacious that I bought for my Dad, and my daily carry knife has been a Manix 2 for a couple years. The Manix 2 handles like a big knife when you hold it by the handle, but when you choke up on the knife by utilizing the choil, it handles like a smaller knife. Lockup is great, and I really like the axis-style lock system because I can open and close the knife quickly one handed. The combination of the blade choil and the bearing lockup mechanism are why I prefer the Manix 2 to the Paramilitary. The Paramilitary is lighter, but the weight of the Manix 2 doesn't bother me at all. I can't feel it in my pocket, and I prefer a heavier knife when it's in my hand. If you like the Tenacious, you'll love the Manix 2.

Can't go wrong with the Kershaw Thermite or the Benchmade 530. When I was up in Colorado I batoned both of these through small trees as tests - both survived without damage and only needed a sharpening & tightening of the pivot afterwards.

I've owned a Paramilitary 2 and a 551 Griptilian. I still own the Griptilian.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley...3.5" blade of CPM-M4 steel that is tough and holds an edge for a VERY long time.
M4 steel has won many national "rope-cutting" competitions. I've had perhaps five or more of this model, and it's great.
You can use it in the woods or in your home. Attractive knife. Good ergos. Super-knife, in my book.
I see it new on the web for $154, or you can find it often in our Exchange section here for $120 or so.

Recently decided that I would like a new assisted opening folder. Was really interested in hearing everyone's suggestions. I am looking to spend no more than $150 and would like it to be a knife that is durable and could last me a while.

thanks,
BB

I have a BM 551 Griptillian that I EDC'd for about three years. I have the Cabela's Exclusive D2 tool steel full size model. It has held up very well I have no complaints about the Grip at all. I must say that the BK1 coating has held up very well, even better than the Cerakote on my BM 810. I don't have any experience with Spyderco blades but from pictures that I've seen, the Paramilitary 2 will most likely be slimmer in the handle and will probably be a better slicer. The 1/8" saber grind on the standard Grip is overkill for EDC IMHO and made slicing cardboard a bit difficult. Either will serve you well.

The Griptilian is a classic, you should have one in a collection. It can hold up for sure. That said, I rarely carry mine, vs. the Spyderco Manix 2 which is just about perfect in every way. As others said also check out the Para2.

With the money you save, I'd also recommend through your price point you add in a Spyderco Sharpmaker. It's a super easy way to keep your blades sharp.

What size blade do you want?
You can still get the aluminum handled ZT 0770 for under $150, and the ZT0350. (Both 3.25" blades, but very different)
I think MAP killed getting the Benchmade 581 in that range; but that's a good one if you like a bigger blade (I think that's 3.6"). Love M390
I haven't been buying a lot of folders recently, and the only assisted openers I currently carry are the ones I posted...but Kershaw has some decent looking assisted knives; and they've been offering some in better steels.

The s30v and s35v are good steels and used by custom makers as well as production models. I personally go for these steels and frame locks.

ZT 566, ZT 350, ZT 770, Kershaw Blur in S30V, Kershaw Knockout in Elmax... Will add more as I think of them.
