Hello,

I recently found this.

What is it called, and what is it normally used for.

What sort of handle (haft) should I put on it, an ordinary hammer handle or something longer.

This thing weighs 2 pounds and appears to be made of good hard steel, it has no markings that I can see, I still have to clean it up.

Thanks for all replies.

Looks almost like a roofing hatchet with a pall peen. The eye seems like it's meant for a hammer handle. If you want something longer get a sledge hammer handle and cut it to length.

Mine too. That is exactly what it is. I would have flattened the ball though. Give it a try and see if they hardened the edge properly.

A 'warrior-machinists' tool from the Prohibition era when you didn't know from day to day whether you were going to be assembling copper tubing concocted things or hastily tearing them down.

I was thrown off by the pictures until I realized that was a metric ruler. I thought it was something huge. But seeing the real size, I'm going to go ahead and agree with the others who think it was a ball peen hammer that was reforged into a hatchet.

There are a lot of blacksmiths that forge old ball pein hammers into tomahawks and hatchets. Most of them draw the pein end out into some form of spike, but there's nothing to say they have to. This looks like it was done some time back.
