Going to Hawaii for the Xmas & NY holiday, can anyone here tell me if there’s a good camping/outdoorsy shop on Big Island and in Honolulu?
And maybe something a bit more tactical, need a few new shirts.
Thanks for your help

When my cousin moved to Hawaii 25 years ago, his Mom would ship clothes to him because everything out there is expensive. Can't imagine that you wouldn't be better shopping for that stuff at home.

Enjoy your trip, the Islands are amazing. We landed at Kona in a black lava field, then drove around to Hilo. The transition from nothing to grassland to the tropical jungle was very impressive. Are you going to check out the lava flow off Pu'u O'o?

There's a heavily overpriced 5.11 outlet here on the road from the airport into Honolulu. There's also a weird climbing/camping hybrid thing (two stores, one building) called "Climb Aloha" and "Uloha" in a part of downtown Honolulu called Kakaako, which has all camping essentials like stove fuel, water purification, etc. and are much better priced than 5.11. Some of the local gun stores like Honolulu Firearms and OGC Tactical may have what you need, too.

On Big Island, it depends what you need and which side you're on. I was surprised to find a very respectable stock of basic camping supplies (including water purification and isobutane canisters) at the Ace Hardware store in Waimea as I headed into Waipio/Waimanu back in August.

think about 50% of the cost for the same things here (even after the $ conversion) when it come to clothing in particular. It's why many of us leave Aus with empty luggage and return with full when travelling to the US. Some even holiday in Hawaii just for the shopping (including one of my staff why flys over between Christmas and New Year.

That is remarkable! Australia being a much bigger market than Hawaii, why is stuff so much more expensive?

Costco.....There are multiple locations on Oahu and it's a membership but you can do all your gift shopping, clothing, recreation equipment(not the best high dollar stuff but adequate for a holiday). The closest one for me is Hawaii Kai Costco so it depends on where you will be staying on arrival. I'm not familiar with any of the other Costco locations. About the Shirts the same designer shirts downtown Honolulu area are 1/2 price at Costco...

Guys, Australia is not a bigger market than Hawaii, as Hawaii is a US state so, taxes are pretty much the same for imports. The price diff from the mainland is largely given by logistic costs (very general view).

Would love to visit Australia someday, way up there on the list :)!
Cheers!

We have a well stocked 5.11 shop in Sydney, so don't need to look for them.

In particular I'm after Salomon hiking shoes, there are a lot of models that can't be bought in Australia and online shops in US won't ship them here.

Stationed there for two years. Been to all the Islands and then some, but that was in the 1980's.
Was totally awesome and clean back then.
Hope you have the same experience.
Best to bring what you need, or you will end up paying $$$.$$ if you can even find exactly what you want.
If you know or get to know someone in the service, they could possibly get stuff from a base px store.

Maybe "Power Edge" Sporting Goods in Honolulu???
