What usually works for me is to open the blade and put lateral pressure on it by pushing it against something like a piece of wood. That usually will bind the bolt enough to keep it from spinning.
It seems like you figured it out, but I have a tip.... you can use a pencil with the eraser held against the smooth pivot. This holds the pivot with the friction from the eraser while you turn the other side.
