Help posting photos to profile

I can post a photo to a thread through photo bucket, how do i post a photo to my profile. Do you have to be a paid member to use an avatar? I cannot unclick the do not use avatar setting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have to have at least a "basic" membership at a cost of $10 a year.
