on a shun fuji 8 1/2" chefs' knife with chip that will likely put the bevel into the "damascus". is there anything different/special to watch out for when
dealing with SG2 and nickel/stainless "damascus". i have a sander and have reprofiled a number(+,- 50) recycled kitchen knives but never this steel.
any help? thanks
ulua

sg2 at 64rc can be quite chippy, so tell us your repair plan (are you going to thin the blade?) & belts. pics & repair markup would helpful.

if the chip is large enough to get close to the damascus layers, you are dealing with important repairs, something tat take a minimum skills to achieve properly. what i'd do is measure the thickness behind the edge now with a caliper, then grind the edge square until the chip is gone. after that you'll have to completely regrind the blade to the original thickness you mesured or it wont perform correctly, this is the most important part of the repair job. dont worry about the damascus sides, when grinding the edge flat it will come close to it or into it but grinding the blade back to shape wil expose the steel again. you'll have to etch the pattern back with ferric chloride too.

this is a professional job imho, i've done it several times... once all by hand on diamond plates and very coarse waterstones ... took me two months getting at it when i had the courage.

sorry, my wi-fi service went down...i did get to read the posts from pwet and bluntcut before it stopped working and that made think i needed to talk with a pro.
i'm a 10 year edgepro pro sharpener owner and planned on using that tool to accomplish my chip repair, plus sanding belts. so with a bunch of time because my computer was down, i called ben dale at edge pro and he was right on the money with his advice. i had a double chip, rite next to each other 3/8" long, one chip
1/32" deep and the other chip 1/16" deep. i taped the sides of the blade. i used a edge pro 120 grit stone with water. it took one hour to bring it down, where in
3 or 4 more sharpenings, the 1/16th" chip will also disappear. the bevel did not get into damascus layers. i finished it with the 7000 tape and the hair on the back of my hand just jumped out of the way. sorry no pics. thanks for the thought provoking advice. all the best, ulua
