Hi all, I am new here, mainly to find help to repair the Boy Scout knife from my youth. It is a traditional Ulster four blade utility scout knife from around 1980. The #2 end spring is broken in half. I know Ulster was bought by Imperial Schrade, which is now out of business. Is there any way I can get this knife repaired? I'd like to have it repaired to keep as a memento (in one piece!) Any help would be appreciated! :)

Welcome Tony...

I personally can't assist you, but there are a few who might.

One thing that came up a while back was that Colonial (I think) was trying to do some repair work for Schrade. I would think that something as fairly mundane as a spring shouldn't be that hard to replace. Handle scales and blades are another matter entirely.

Now, if you are mechanically talented, you may be able to find a junker on ebay and scrap it for parts.

Sorry I can't offer any other help, but I'm sure somebody else will chime in.

My advice, for what it is worth, is to contact Colonial Knife Company. They have offered to repair Schrade knive at a very reasonable rate. And the Scout knife of yours is very much like the Forrest Master, so there is a very good chance they will have parts for yours. Getting a matching knife off ebay with a broken blade or cracked scale is a perfect way to send them exact replacement parts with your knife.

This one was only $15.00 on eBay:

Looks like you have your parts knife. Be sure to mark for them the one you want restored. You can contact Colonial via e-mail any time if you have not already. They will tell you what to enclose for the repair charge (was a flat $20) plus return postage. Congrats!

Sorry, Codger, I should have said that I only paid $15 for this knife on eBay. There are actually a couple of Ulster BSA knives listed right now that are in better condition and the bids are still under $10.00

Thanks for your comments. I recieved a call today from Colonial after posting an inquiry on their website. The guy was very nice, but stated the repair could be $200 - $300 because they would have to make a special device to hold the knife while re-assembling and putting the center pin in. Might take his tool maker two days to do it.

I guess I'll just put my broken knife on the shelf. I didn't know it was such a big deal. :(

Thanks anyway, guys.

Tony, the fact that your knife is broken is part of it's history, it's still a memento of your childhood. If you really desire a working example, you can buy the same knife on eBay, sometimes in new condition, for anywhere from $5.00-$20.00. Keep your original the way it is and get another one to go with it. The new one will be kind of like a "leader dog" knife.

Hello I left this thread alone since I wanted to see where it would go it ended up as I thought it would. The idea of sending knives to Colonial is not as I knew from the beginning realistic. Even Schrade when it received a knife back from a customer usually just send a new replacment of the same model. Obviously they cannot do this with your knife. Colonial also does not want to be in the knife repair business.

However try this, look at your knife. As you can see its construction is not rocket science. you have about ( if I recall ) three rivets. Levines 4 th edition I believe has a blow apart picture of this or a similar knife. In fact I think I once posted a picture of it. In any event. If you simply bought another similar ( same model knife ) anyone with any mechanical ability can fix yours. If the rivets are drilled out on both knives you could simply replace the broken parts with the good ones.

This was the original suggestion from Glennbad. A lot of information often offered in good faith is often wrong this is only my suggestion. As Bernie Levine often points out it takes more than a few well read articles and repeating what is in them to be come proficient in any subject. I have been doing this for 50 years and still have a lot to learn, but at least I do realize this fact. So whatever you decide please know my suggestion is only my opinion. LT
