Of course there are no markings on this. The only history have is that it was picked up at an estate sale in the 80s. It has a beautiful stag handle and a leather/wood sheath. Cannot tell what metal is used for metallic sheath parts. Blade is 7 1/4" and overall length is 12". Any insight would be appreciated.

Germany, probably late 1800's - 1930's or so. Knives like this were sold as Saufanger (boar hunting knives) or Bowie style Hunters depending on the market. Those type of figural guards with the clamshell nagel are also seen on the larger Hirschfanger hunting swords. Sorry, can't tell a brand because a lot of firms were doing similar both for their own firms and under contract to others.

Nice knife.

Edit, I'd think nickel silver for the fittings.

Thank Tltt! This is very helpful. It is certainly a hefty knife.

Sometimes they are marked with a maker’s mark below the clamshell nagel. You may want to examine that area closely.

Thank you n2s. I will certainly check that area. There is some gunk and light corrosion in the nook between the blade and the nagel. Would 0000 steel wool be safest to use towards cleaning that up?

First start with something like mineral oil (baby oil). Apply a little on a folded paper towel and gently clean the area. You are trying to loosen and remove gunk.

You're going to want to do something about that rust on the blade near the guard and blade tip. Nothing abrasive, just some WD40 on a rag.

It looks to me like the blade was blued.
