Hey guys,
I recently cleaned up my Grandfathers Bowie knife, but to be honest I have zero experience honing a knife like this.
Can anybody give me any pointers or links to good threads? Sorry to be an annoying newb.
I restore and shave with straight razors so I have a DMT 325, King 1200, DMT 1200, and a few Belgian Natural stones (BBW and Coticules)
Thanks in advance
Grant

i would get some 3m wetordry sandpaper in 400 grit and work up a burr and strop it off when done. there is no need to go that fine on a bowie. i have found that a coarse edge cuts a lot better and since you restore and shave with a razor you know that kind of an edge will not hold up.

i'm a member over on srp, i'll have to go sign in so i can check out your picture :D. if you want some more help send me an email with your number and i'll give you a call. rje196021@gmail.com

if you have a buffer you can get a set of paper wheels to sharpen your knives on too. the knife in the vid below was sharpened on them. it is a half convex chisel grind so i used a belt sander to form the half convex edge but i finished it off on the slotted paper wheel. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=578787

here is a vid of a knife i made and sharpened that a member has on a private passaround. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q_eMwRaHYg

I'm noticing your pic link requires a member login over at SRP, to view the picture. To encourage more feedback, you might want to upload the pic to photobucket or imageshack, and paste the IMG code link here in your post. Otherwise, many here won't be able to see what you're working on.

i just seen the picture. it looks like you did a lot of work to get it cleaned up. i would use 400 grit to put a v edge or a convex edge and then strop the edge after that. it should be good to go then :D
