Help sharpening my BM 942

Hey guys, I have a Benchmade 942 that I've been trying to sharpen. It was an older model that came with a 154cm blade. I sent it in for a new blade from Benchmade, and it came back with a s30v blade that wasn't very sharp. I've tried touching it up on the Spyderco sharpmaker, on the 40 degree side, but could still never really get it sharp. So, last night I starting looking around online, and I saw a post where someone mentioned that they had the same problem and called Benchmade, who told them that they grind their knives at 30 degree. So, I decided to give it another go on the sharpmaker. This time I did the sharpie on the blade trick to tell if I'm getting the right angle. Well, after a few swipes on one side, the marker was removed all the way down to the edge, so I assume that this side is at the proper 15 degree bevel. On the other side, I sharpened the heck out of it, and just can't seem the get it to where the maker is removed all the way down to the edge. I assume that means the this side is still not down to 15 degrees yet. The thing that bothers me a little is that the bevel on the non 15 degree side is starting to look wider (from spine to edge) that that of the 15 degree side. Is this normal? I'm deciding between sending it off to Razor's Edge or just keeping at it myself.

It's normal for factory grinds to be less than perfect and in need of adjustment. You want to keep the edge centered when grinding so as you try and even the bevels take a close look to make sure you are not pushing one side over center. If you have the diamond rods that would help S30V is tougher to grind and the standard brown stones are not aggressive enough to remove the metal you need to remove.

If you would like some help getting the bevel adjusted send me a email and we'll get you fixed up.

Thanks for the offer Knifenut. I'll be emailing you shortly.

Richard - I wouldn't be opposed to trying something new, but at the moment the funds just aren't there. That's why I had considered sending it to someone to get the proper bevel on it, then I'll just maintain it on the sharpmaker.

for less than $100. you can get set up with the wheels. you can maintain your knives with the slotted wheel with just a few passes.

The S30V holds a pretty good edge once you get it sharpened up to begin with, and I had good luck with my Sharpmaker's fine rods for keeping my 930's blade in good shape once I had gotten the edges profiled where they needed to be and even. Trying to accomplish THAT on a sharmaker, though, with a steel as abrasion resistant as S30V will drive you to distraction. After Knifenut sets your bevels correctly for you, you should be able to KEEP it sharp with the sharpmaker for a long time. :)

May be cheaper to just send it off to Richard for a reprofile as that's usually what's needed with a standard factory edge. The sharpmaker is only good for touchups and not a rebevel or anything involving a lot of metal removal.

MDSmith send your knife to the Richard J Spa for a deep tissue massage lol!! I have over 200 knives and have been in this game for a long time. I recently sent a custom knife that came with a stock "toothy working edge" to Richard! He put a new edge on it that is absolutely amazing!! Before it went to RJ it wouldnt come close to shaving my hairy arms! He sent it back so sharp that it literally split a moustache hair down the middle!! I know there are a lot of guys on here promising sharp, shiny pretty edges, but Richard with his "magic" paper wheels is a notch above the rest! Send it off to Richard!! He s very reasonable cost wise and fast turn around! I am so confident that you will be blown away with his edge that if you arent I personally will cover any of the expenses! Now im not a friend of Richards, hes not paying me to promote his work ha! I just met him on here and gave him a shot with a pretty expensive knife and he did an amazing job!! Heres my thread about the knife im speaking of! Trust me on this one!! Cheers!

I definitely second sending it to Richard. While others may get a pretty edge that will "whittle hair", Richard will get you a good cutting edge that will cut like a lazer and last.
He's also great at teaching people how to sharpen well.
