I could use some guidance. I have a Ranger RD7....a beast. I need to do some reprofiling towards the tip of the blade as it is way too obtuse to take an edge. I'm scared chitless to try any 'freehanding' with this blade, as all past attempts with other blades have ended up in the scrap heap. I can't justify the $150 expense of an EP Apex, and was looking at either a Lansky or Gatco system. Will either of these two "lesser" systems be able to handle, or even work on a blade of this size? What about the "Sharpmaker" for this task? Any advice would be appreciated.

They all will. With a Lansky or Gatco, move the clamp as you sharpen. With the Sharpmaker, just use as normal. Belt sanders work good, too, and their initial expense ($30-50 for a 1"x30" from Harbor Freight and some bucks for finer belts) isn't too scary.

I'm with Thombrogan. Any of these sharpeners should do the job. I had a Ranger 9 and I was glad to have paid the extra $ for the diamond "sleeves" for my Sharpmaker rods. Don't need them much, but when re-profiling an edge--especially a BIG one--they come in handy. Best Wishes--James Falor SEMPER FI
