Help Sharpening the Spine on Spyderco Caspian

I bought the caspian for abalone diving and want as much cutting power as possible. So I'm attempting to get the spine of the blade as sharp as the lower, factory edge. I took it to a knife sharpener to put an edge on top, but it wasn't nearly as fine as the factory edge. Last night I spent 2 hours trying to get the edge where I'd like it using my Spyderco Sharpmaker, but no matter how many times I passed the blade over the ceramics (at 30deg), maintaining as steady an angle as I could, it didn't seem to help. It's sorta sharp now, but not shaving sharp like I want it. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or ??? Any tips, tricks or recommendations appreciated!

Hey thanks for the tip, Bugs. It did work. It'll shave now, not quite as fine as the factory edge, but decent enough. How do you reprofile an edge to get a 30 deg angle instead of 40?

Sharpening is really not my forte(sp?). My best guess is to get the Diamond Rods and sharpen the blade on the 30 deg side. Someone else will have to chime in though. All the best and good luck sharpening :).

There are a few options.

1. buy the 204D diamond rods
2. get some sand paper (various aggressive grits) and wrap it around the Sharpmaker rods and clip it with an aligator clip

Then finish up with the regular rod surfaces.

Good luck!
