I am using a Sharpmaker 204 to maintain the edge on my Basic #5, but I'm a bit worried about slowly but surely screwing the edge up.

I have watched the sharpening video, and have searched this forum completely for help on the sharpening, but it's still not clear enough to me.

Should I use the white fine sticks, in the 40 degree slots on the base, and strop up, or stroke down? Or should I free hand with the fine white? If so, what angle should I try to maintain?

Any detailed procedure for using the 204 would be great.

If you want to use the Sharpmaker as your primary sharpening system then just sharpen as normal as Sal describes in the video. The angle that Busse has ground is probably different than Sharpmaker settings so start off with the coarse rods until the edge is set and then proceed as in the video. I would recommend that you use the 15 degree edge bevel, and if this doesn't have the necessary level of durability (edge takes damage during use) then put a small 20 degree microbevel on top of it (grind the damage out using the 20 degree setting). It takes fairly heavy use to want a full 20 degree bevel.

Cliff,

Excellent information, and much appreciated.

I'll give that a try, and see how it works for me.
Also, I might just pick up a ceramic rod and a strop, and give that a try also.

The white Sharpmaker hones will serve as a ceramic rod, however you can't go wrong with a strop and some buffing compound.

Hand American has not only strops & compound, they also sell the leather so you can make your own custom size strop. They will cut the leather in sizes up to 3'x4'. Now THAT is a strop big enough for even a Battle Mistress. ;)
