Hey everyone! I own a high carbon sword and I recently got some rust on it. After talking to my friend, he made me agree to let him to do it.

Anyway, turns out that he didnt know what he was doing and he used the ROUGH SIDE OF A SPONGE to clean it, not the bottom half of my sword has surfaces scratches and isn't shiny any more.

Anyone know how I can fix this?

Sandpaper. Get 120 grit 220 300something 400sometging 600 and 1500. And a Small sanding block. Sand with 120 in one direction across whole blade until whole blade scratched then opposite direction with 220 until scratched then first direction and so on. Should be really shiny by 1500 grits. I only made it to 600 and that made my dagger decently mirror/shiny haven't had time due to other projects to finish. If 1500 doesn't satisfy then go up from there but higher grit will take longer each time. Trick is patience. Don't use low grit any more than you have to maybe even start at 300. Yeah around 300 grit sounds better. It'll take a little longer but likely remove less steel off blade I suggest doing whole blade for even finish

Did the sword have a mirror finish, with no visible scratches at all? Could you see your reflection clearly in the blade?

If it did have a true mirror finish, and if that's what you want to get back, the blade will need to be polished. And polishing near the guard/handle would likely require the sword to be disassembled.

No sandpaper of any grit is going to give you a true mirror finish. Even 2000 grit sand paper will produce a slightly satin finish, sort of like a dirty mirror.

Can you post a picture of the scratches?

Do you have access to a polishing wheel? If not, perhaps you can find someone in your area who does professional metal polishing.
