I'm in the market for an inexpensive but good sleeping bag. A wool blanket will work for the next month here but after that its going to be cold. I found a military ECWS sleeping bag with 2 inner layers and a shell for 100 bucks.

Is that a decent option?

There are several good sleeping bags available at comparable price right now from major manufacturers like The North Face, Marmot, Kelty, etc. Generally they are more compact, lighter and at least as warm. I'd think a 20 degree bag would suffice for your needs. Synthetic insulation bags in that temp range usually weigh 3# or less, and compact to a carry size of 8"x14" or less. Some careful searching online will yield several options.

I personally recommend against Slumberjack and Eureka, but some here swear by them, not at them.

I really like my ECWS bag. It is heavy, but a rarely bring both bags. $100 is a crazy low price. Make sure it is a real bag and not just Mil-Spec.

Partly depends upon whether you will be backpacking or car camping. Also on your load carrying capacity, if packing. ECWS is generally a bit heavier than some of the alternatives.

My Marmot Pinnacle is so freaking warm, and can pack down to the size of a football. But that is a high end bag...

Down packs down smaller (for the most part) and some argue that it's warmer, but synthetic materials still insulate when wet and down does not.

Yes, I have a 1 lb. 13 oz. Marmot Helium that is very warm and compact----and expensive.
