I am looking for a small folding knife that would fit comfortably in the pocket of a pair of slacks. Lightweight and small when closed are the most important aspects (3.2 inches closed or less and 1.5 oz or less if possible). I am impressed with the William Henry Carbon Fiber Kestrel, but am not quite ready to spend $170. I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks

Welcome to the forums! May I suggest the Benchmade 770 Osborne Axis Lock folder. The blade length is 3", OAL is around 6". The handle is carbon fiber, which makes this piece feather light (little heavier than the WH CF Kestrel). The Axis Lock makes the action buttery smooth. It's my favorite small folder. It lists for $170, but if you look around the net long enough you can find dealers selling this knife at a good discount. I highly recommend this one.

Spyderco Calypso Jr. It has my pick for the best steel out there, VG-10. The handle will fit your hand however you hold it, and it is small and light. Check out www.spyderco.com.

The small Buck Lightning #170 series is dandy in this size range, and quite affordable, too. :D

If you like the looks of the 770, I say go for it. It is a great little knife. I carried one this summer at work (had to wear a suit) and even clipped to my pocket the clip looked like a nice pen clip. Very unnoticeable. If you want a bigger knife go 942/940-- 3.4 inch blade, but thin and smooth as silk.

If you are thinking seriously about getting a 770 or a 940, e-mail me I will put you in touch with the guy I get all my BM's from. He will give you the best deal around.

The Benchmade Terzuola Park Avenue is a work of engineering genius. I can't tell you how much I love it. ($90) Another choice might be a William Henry evolution series ($110). I own both and prefer the park avenue.

Although it's the 2nd heaviest of my spydies, I barely even notice its there.
Kicking in at $63 US
Length Blade 2 5/16" 58mm
Length Cutting Edge 1 7/8" 48mm
Length Overall 5 7/16" 138mm
Weight 2.6oz 73g
ATS-55 steel, flat-grind.

A great addition to any collection.

Welcome to the forums!...we have excellent choices on site starting under $30.00 for the Kershaw Chive....the Benchmade 770, 330, 335 and 450 are again all excellent choices..we just got in the 335 w/titanium handles(can be seen on the dealer for sale forum here). Only 139 produced! Just got a few spyderco Meerkats, and crickets, but expect them to be gone asap. Ah, so many knives...so little time. Regards, Mike-

My suggestion would be to look at the A.G. Russell One-Handed Knife. It is close to the right length and weight. It is one of the lightest and thinnest knives I've seen that still feels "full-sized" in use. You can get them for around $50.

I second the 770 and the Calypso Jr.

Then again, if you can get your hands on a Meerkat...Hmm...

Welcome to the forums, tortfeasor. You're getting a lot of good ideas here. Hope I can contribute also.

First, I'm behind the Spyderco Native FRN and Calypso Jr Ltwt, in that order. The weight might be more than you want, and I usually am pretty well put off by SS handles, but AG Russell has the Spyderco Jess Horn in SS for $50. It is one of the best looking production knives I've seen.

I can't say anything about it's performance, but I really like the shape and "furnishings" of the SOG Sculptura. It has a real round sort of design, like a good skipping rock. It is made from Zytel -- transluscent Zytel, in several different colors, I think. It has a lock controlled by a spring, which, as well as all other inner workings are visible from outside. Gotta get a vote for plain cool, in my book.

Everything is so relative in weight. I always carry at least 2 "full size" knives, so knives like the Native and Calypso Jr already strike me as very light. So, though they may be heavier than you're thinking of, I think you might consider either the Camillus EDC or the Outdoor Edge Paragee. Both are frame locks designed by Darrel Ralph, surely one of the true geniuses of the knife world. At first, I liked the Paragee better, but the EDC is growing on me. Fantastic service from Camillus in another area has earned my wholehearted respect and gratitude.

One more -- almost forgot it. The Spyderco Mouse, marketed by Edge-Tech, which is owned by Tim Wegner, the designer of the Mouse and the incomparable Wegner and Wegner Jr. It's pretty spendy, $90 I think, but truly cool, and a "real" working knife, below that cute surface.

Good luck!

How about a small Spyderco Wayne Goddard Micarta?

No pocket clip but it's a great design. Even though they are discontinued a lot of people still have them in stock and you can pick one up for about $30.

e-mail me if you need help finding one, I know of a few dealers that have them in stock.

I would also suggest the following:

Spyderco Meercat
Spyderco Centofani II
Benchmade 705

Good luck, have fun!

Jeans are one thing, slacks are another animal altogether.

Try this: 3/4 size Spydie Jess Horn
Very nice. Accessorizes a man in slacks well.

Here is another: Ken Onion Chive
Neat little piece. Inexpensive, and really cool.

Or any of these: Swiss Army Knives
Always a classic. Scissors cut the threads from your jacket, and your fingernails are always clean and trim. Happy hunting.

Untill you save the $ for the knife you really want, you might check out the CRKT Apache III, a $75 knife on sale now @ SMKW for $15. Small, light, attractive, very well made, ATS-34 blade steel....I carry mine on the links, clipped to thin golfe slacks - totally unobtrusive.

You might want to take a look at the Jim Hammond designed Mirage Titanium by CRKT. It's small and very light, has a titanium frame with frame lock, removeable clip and pretty good steel (kinda like VG-10).

Greg at Skylands has them in stock I think, ($70) take a peek here:

Edit - I forgot, it's 3 3/8 closed and weighs 1.4 oz.

The Ti Mirage is a great little knife! But you might also want to look at the Spyderco Toad, Mouse, and even thought it's a little large, the Chinese.
Happy hunting,
Matt
