.......I just traded for a S&W model 60. It is in the original old box w/ papers and cleaning tools, and the serial number on the box matches the one on the bottom of the handle. It looks like it was never fired and the serial number seems really low to me. It is R3XX, R followed by only three numbers. If you can help me identify the year it was made or have any other info please post, pm, or email me.

Thanks!

Some of the guys over at the smith-wessonforum.com might could tell you but if not you just need to call the S&W.

The R series of serial numbers was used from 1969 to 1983 on mod 60's only.
I would think it was made sometime in 1969 or 1970. If you write S&W they will be able to tell you and may know whet it was originally shipped. Good find. I have a nickel plated mod 36 and a Mod 38 love both of them. Enjoy!

Have a little patience. It's probably going to be a while before someone who might have an answer finds your post. :)

If you want to join thehighroad.org, you mind get an answer in this very long sticky thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=372213

Thanks....just joined and posted.....looks like that will answer my question. Thanks again!

Sweet. Some useful information. Thanks.

I traded an old beat up Glock 17 and $200 for it.

Have you called S&W customer service?

Yeah, I know they used to do this for free.
