I am planning on having a hard use field grade knife made. First what would be a good choice for blade material if ease of sharpening yet good edge retention is important. Yet at the same time corrosion is also an issue. Add to that edge strength. Not asking for much am I? :D Also what would be the best blade shape and grind?

tom, field knife is A LITTLE VAGUE:D your best bet would be go to a knife show in your area. and handle a few. when you find what you like you can ask the maker about making one. good luck.

I agree with Laurence about the blade design. As to steel....I would go with ATS-34. I always thought of it as a semi-stainless, I guess to ease my mind over using anything but carbon. I was corrected the other day. For me it takes and holds an edge very well and is a tough steel to boot.
