Alot of really knowledgable folks on here so I figured this was the place to ask.

Curious for two reasons, first off, he's pretty cool looking, second, my Pitbull has been a mess for a few days now. Swelling, nasty rash, vomiting. We've been giving her allergy meds for two days now and she seems to feel alot better after she gets it, swelling goes down and she sleeps but within 6 hours she starts to scratch constantly, rubs herself on the furniture, swells up again.... Going to the vet tomorrow if conditions don't improve.

Wondering if she could have gotten a bite from something.

Anyway, I work as a pest control tech and have never seen one of these before but I've only been in Tx. about 2 years so theres alot I've never seen.

He's a little guy, fit four of him on a dime. Fast as all get out and a bit of a pissy disposition.

Anyone have any idea what he is?

The spider does not look like any highly venomous spider that I am familiar with in central, south, or east Texas. Your pit probably spotted some sort of poisonous or venomous reptile. Where is the swelling?

I have only seen such spiders in or around a house where paranormal activity is about to take place very soon.

THAT IS A SPIDER MIMICKING A WASP MIMICKING AN ANT.
This spider mimics a velvet ant (actually a wasp) so it does not get messed with. Velvet Ants pack a mean punch and this spider knows it, so it dressed accordingly.

Species name (best guess without critter in hand)

Castianeira amoena

If she is vomiting it may be a insect bite more so than a snake bite. Are you giving her benedryl?

She's swelling alot around the face, head and neck but the rash is swollen also.

Funny, first thing I said to Kate when she found the spider was "Damn, it looks like a velvet ant.

Yea, were doing benedryl. 75mg every 6 hours-ish. (she weighs 75-80lb.)

Shotgunner,

You can honestly double or triple that dose of benadryl if you'd like. Dogs don't metabolize benadryl the same way humans do. The Veterinarians give HUGE doses of it. Try that before you take her in.

Oh jeez, I'm sorry to hear about your 'pup' I'm sure he'll be fine. And I agree with the Benadrly, I heard that for every pound your dog weighs give 1mg/ 1lb. But nevertheless, my vet says for my 50lbs pitbull only total of 50mg of benadryl a day.

See if you can get some injectable HistamineX from a vet supply/farm store.
Shave the bite area and look for some Boldo or pau d'arco tea bags...........firebush leaves, hamelia patens, will work too.
Make a paste, splatter it on and wrap it,. Put mint oil or cinnamon oil on the outside of the bandage . hot sauce will work, in a pinch, to keep it from ripping it off.
Spider bites aint nothing to play around with.

shotgunner this inflammation has gone on long enough. take your pooch to the vet. we all try to advoid x-tra expense but if dog has to hospitlized or passes.dennis

Yeah, what he says!

My little Cocker Spaniel gets ear infections all the time. I figured I would just keep cleaning it untill things got better. Well to make a long story short, The poor girl was almost deaf cause I waited so long. She is doing alot better now, but I felt like crap for not taking her in sooner....

I have nothing to add here of value, other than to comment on the spider looking interesting, and to wish your dog a speedy recovery.

She had her last dose of Benedryl yesterday around this time and the rash and swelling has subsided without the meds.

Now we just need to get her to stop throwing up and to eat and drink. She's only throwing up from time to time now, 6 to 12 hours in between. She's drinking a bit but has no interest in food, even ham and bread, her favorites.

I think she's just sick from all the medication she's taken in the past 48 hours.

Wife took her to the vet today and they turned her away. Didn't have an appointment available and said she wasn't an emergency so she waits again.

If I can get her drinking regularly I'll most likely skip her vet appointment for tomorrow afternoon.
