I just sold off a few to fund a really nice one.I am looking at either a SNG,AR or lg Sebenza.I have a sm reg Sebie now. With all I have heard about Strider it may be time for one.How thick are they and are they really worth the cash?
I really like Sebenzas but with haveing a small one already and no Striders :rolleyes:
Is the AR or SNG the better choise.

Since you have a small sebbie, I would suggest getting the Strider AR instead of the SnG.

Its a big folder.

Agree......go with the AR, and never look back for a heavy duty folder!

I would consider others:

- Rick Hinderer Firetac;
- Mike Obenauf Model 2 small framelock;
- C2O (Carson, Carson and Obenauf)

All of them are priced the same or less than an SNG.

If you really want to stick to Strider v Sebenza, then why don't you try the Gen6 SNG, with the hinderer lock stabilizer.

The upside about SNGs is that because of their "rough" fit and finish, you'll soon find that they're the knives you naturally reach for, use and abuse.

Get someone to pick a good one for you, and you'll soon be hooked ;) !

Sebenza!
I've handled two AR's recently, and found them way overbuild and very rough in finish and action. My Sebbie feels much better!
To me they are not worth their money, but YMMV

I just went through that decision dilemma, and I'm waiting for shipment of a Strider SMF.

The watch-maker precision of the Sebenza is very appealing, but the Strider seems to have superior ergonomics, superior blade-grind and tool-like functionality.

The Sebenza easily wins the beauty contest, if that's what you like.

FWIW, I have medium sized hands and I find the Sebenza more ergonomic. The SNG's finger groove didn't fit my hands.

Not sure why it has a superior blade grind tho' - for prying - yes. but for slicing, I think they're about the same.

By 'superior ergonomics', I mean the choil-cutout accomodation for the forefinger and the great spine-traction-notches accomodation for the thumb on the Strider folders.

By 'superior blade-grind', I mean that I simply prefer the double-flat grind over a hollow-grind on any blade.

There's nothing 'wrong' with the Sebenza at all - it just comes down to individual prefereces.

My vote is for the large Sebenza. The Striders are great though if you want a really hard use knife, they do that very well. I had an SNG and have had a number of Sebenza's. After having Sebs the Striders just didn't do it for me enough. I liked it for a while but then the lower fit and finish started to bother me and I started missing the old Sebenza. After having a Strider folder I don't think I'll ever purchase one again, not because they arn't good knives but because they just arn't my style of knife. The Sebenza is. Tough as it needs to be and built with a precision that many other knives are lacking.

Spyken made some good suggestions of custom makers to look at and I would take his advice before spending the money. You already have one Seb so a custom may make things a little more interesting. Then again, I have a drawer full of nice customs right now and the knife sitting in my pocket is a beat up small Seb I just got in a trade. It just feels right.

Hey U812 - How ya been? Listen I have both the larg Seb and the Sng and I'll tell you what - the SnG is sweeeeeeet. Best knife I've owned so far. They are expensive yes - but remember this.. Striders hold their resale value because of their exc. warrenty. The SnG is perfect size for EDC IMO, Its around the same size as the large Sebbie, The AR on the other hand is freekin HUGE, and yes I do want one. But be warned!!!... Once you buy one Strider, your going to be hooked really bad and your going to want all of them. Im telling you Im going broke right now trying to get another Strider and I've lost interest Im all the other brands of knives I used to like. Oh yea - If you want to learn about striders, ask question, see pics, this is where all the strider knuts hang ... www.usualsuspect.net

I keep seeing..."for hard use, the Strider is the better choice"...and I've just got to ask...why?

What, exactly, do you think the AR or SnG is capable of that a large Sebenza can't handle?

I've owned an AR(briefly) and quite a few Sebenzas, no SnG's though.

To me, the AR had the illusion of greater strength due to it's massive size, and "tactical" finish, but in reality, I don't think it could outperform the Sebenza in ANY capacity, thus, I sold it.

The SnG doesn't appeal to me either, it simply doesn't strike me as being any more capable than a large Sebenza, which has a far superior finish and tighter tolerances for less money. Am I missing something?

BTW, if you turn this into a flame war, you suck, that's not my objective here.

I'd honestly like to hear what technical advantages the Striders have that make them so desirable for hard use.

Jeff, keep in mind an AR is about twice as thick as a large Seb, and longer. I honestly laughed out loud when I received mine, it looked like a G-10 brick. :D

Rhesus - I TOTALLY agree. I dont see where the Striders are that much tougher than the Seb, I mean the Seb is all Ti and S30V - you cant get much tougher than that. Both of of these knives are tough folders and are able to handle any hard use thrown at them. Where I think the SnG comes out ahead (and this is personal) is in the ergonomics. The grip, the choil, the thumbramp that actually stops your thumb from sliding etc.,

I would buy a Sebenza, better fit and finish for the bucks, Every Strider I have seen was rough and unfinished looking especially so for a knife in that price range. Plus a Sebenza is built like a tank also, I can't imagine anything being stronger in a folder even if it does "look" and is advertised as "tactical".

Kinda like asking "Porsche or Hummer", huh? ;)

Get a custom folder from an "rising star" knifemaker (the talented youngsters usually offer great quality at very reasonable prices). Just my opinion.
