Hi again to all.......

I look to you the experts on here for advise. I tried doing some searches but didn't come up with much.....

I am interested in buying the ATCF TERZULOA from Microtech. It has a 154CM blade. I spoke with one of Microtech's reps & he told me that they will be coming out with a few more variations of this knife one being a S30V blade. I prefer the S30V...I've just had good luck with it.
I don't really know the differences between the 2 steels & would like to know your opinions on this. I use my knives for mostly light to medium use. Nothing ever heavy duty.
Will the 154CM be fine or should I wait for the higher price increase( more than likely) & get the S30V?

Thank you to all on here. Funny, since I am new on here, the wife has been getting mad. I'm spending too much time on here :D .
Yeah, but there are alot of great people on here & where else can you learn about everything & anything you ever wanted to know about knives? Damned if you do & ...you know the rest.

Thank you all!

I use both steels in knife making (Well technically I've been using ATS-34 rather than 154 CM, but fundamentally the same steel).

S30V and 154 CM come from the same manufacturer and same construction process (CPM).

S30V is going to hold an edge a little longer (4% Vanadium).

S30V is a tougher steel (all things being equal on the heattreat), but not enough to make a difference in a folder.

Same Chromium content so you'd think they'd be the same corrosion resistance. However, Crucible says S30V is higher.

Both of them can be a PITA to sharpen.

S30V is all the rage - it's the cool steel.

A heck of a lot of great custom and production knives have been made with 154 CM (OK I heard there was a time when crucible wasn't doing a good job, but I think we're past that).

You'll have to decide. Both are fine.

Steve

BTW If you haven't noticed it Valentine's Day. Get your butt off the computer or we won't be seeing you for a while.

Unfortunately, the wife is working tonight so I have some time to chat. Dropped my son off at the grandparents house & I'm all alone!
Peace & quiet is restored! Darn....forget, I have to be @ work by 4:30.....grumble, grumble. But all is good. There is a knife show in Chicago Ridge that I'll be going to. So tomorrow isn't all bad. ;)

I often wonder if we make to much out of steels esp the steel used in production knives. I have had Aus6 that holds its edge as good as 440c and I have had 440c that is good as ats34/154cm and when it comes down to it I suppose there are blades out there of ats34/154cm just as cood as S30v. It really comes down to heat treatment and most production companies cannot put the time into heat treatment that the custom makers can. Some heat treaters can really make a steel "sing" and that's where good steel comes into its own. If the price difference is great I would save and take the lesser price but if there is not much difference go with the better steel.

Whatever super steel you buy, next year someone will tell you it's garbage and you have to switch to the latest and greatest. I agree with JDBLADE that if the heat treat is well-done, especially for a folder that's not going to see actual hard use, any of the better steels will be indistinguishable in use. Go for the very good 154-CM now and enjoy the knife!

You have got to figure out what kind of knives your wife will like so you get her involved in collecting too or you will never have peace -- until you have so many knives you won't notice when she walks out

I certainly think that we place too much emphasis on blade steel. I now look at the overall design of the knife and compare it to my requirements.

If you want a TERZULOA, I say get it now while people still have the hand ground version in stock. Future versions will be machine ground and I feel that the current configuration is worth the price as I doubt it will go down much when the switch over.

There are three new D/A side openers that are coming out. Two bolster release and one scale release. All in s30v. With the price on the ATCF Terzuloa, I would wait and see if I liked any of the new models better. Pictures should be available soon now that Shot Show is over.

MT's treatment of 154CM has an excellent reputation. I wouldn't hesitate at all.

The Terzuola ATCK is a gorgeous knife. Go for it, and good luck.:)
