Hi all,
This is my first post here and I'm glad I found this place!
I've been looking around for a solid, durable, folding knife but I just don't know what is quality and what is crap. I want something I can carry around, take camping, use for whatever, etc.
My friend has a Gerber Paraframe and it looks nice and I like the style, but it seems from reading things on this forum that it is not a great knife.
What can you guys recommend under $30?
Thanks!

The whole Spyderco Byrd line is well regarded, so is the Benchmade Monochrome. For a couple, 5-10 bucks more, you could get a Kershaw scallion, or even a Spyderco Native. For definitely under 30, I say get a Byrd Meadowlark or Cara Cara. You should be able to get one in G10, which is a grippy handle material that you won't find on most cheaper knives. Listen to the others that will soon post though, most have more learned opinions.

If you go to your local wal mart you can get a kershaw storm II for 30$. This knife is great and is highly regarded on this forum. the fit and finish on this knife is amazing for a low end production knife. I would say check this out.

I recommend the Kershaw Storm II , its one of my favorites. It's a full sized , cool looking and solidly built knife for around $30.00. Its a manual opening knife that can be opened with the stud or a flipper on top of the frame.

The knife features a frame lock too, which usually comes on more expensive knives.... and its made in the USA.

If you don't want to wait for shipping Walmart carries them too.

Ha i was reading your post and you had me confused cause i was saying what you said. lol Great minds think alike:thumbup:

At Wal-Mart, they sell the Gerber AR 3.00 Liner lock for $27, which has either a partially serrated or plain (your choice) blade that is black teflon coated. It has an aluminum handle with rubber inserts. I carry a very similar knife, and like it. I have handled that model, and was impressed- and chances are I will be buying one in the near future.

If you look around on the net you can find a good price for a Buck 110 or a Buck 112.
Tough knives with lots of history behind them, and made in the USA!

I also suggest the Kershaw Storm. Either the Storm I or II, just different sizes. I have a Storm I, been carying it for over a year, and it still has no play at all. It can stand up to alot. It even has a small flipper!

if you don't mind having no pocket clip, the boker magnum kalashnikov is a pretty good knife for under 30. its aus 8 steel and aluminum handles. very sharp out of the box and easy to sharpen.

spyderco is very good. but I'm not as partial to their designs...though I'm liking them more and more.

any spyderco, benchmade, boker....some cold steel...

or if u don't mind saving your money up and getting a higher end productin such as microtech and mod

While you're at Wally-World, I'd suggest either a Buck 110 (as mentioned above), or going in a different direction, you might want to look at a Victorinox Swiss Army knife. For an all around, do a little bit of everything kind of knife, a SAK is mighty hard to beat (plus you can get a nice model for the $20 - $25 range).

For that money, a Buck 110, for $39 at Wally-world, the Spyderco Native is a great way to go.

Well I ended up with a Kershaw Storm I. The Storm II was just too big and heavy. Thanks for the help!

I like my Kershaws. I like my Gerbers, too, even the ones like the EVO that you can find in blister packs in the big box stores. I honestly don't see what the problem is with these knives.

Believe it or not, K-merde sells an aluminum linerlock under the Northwest Territory house brand that isn't bad at all. Spotted it on closeout for $12 and said what the hell. Then went back and got the rest that were left.

Oh, yeah, there's the old-school Opinels, which come highly recommended, but I haven't tried one myself.
