This is my great-great grandfather J. U. Long's pocket knife. He was from Catawba County, NC. Born on 12/25/1843, and died on 11/3/1928. J. U. Long was a POW during the Civil War, imprisoned at Elmira, NY.

If anyone has an idea what it is, please let me know.

Thank you.

Jon

Jon, that knife is very old & possibly quite dangerous. You need to send it to me & I'll safely dispose of it for you. No Charge.
You're welcome.:)

I enlarged the tangs but they are too pixelated, Jon!! A more hi-def pic of the markings would help!!
Interesting knife!!

I can't make anything out from these photos or with my naked eyes. Perhaps a quality camera with a macro lens could resolve.

I think the top pic is pretty good, but that stamp is pretty worn. I might be able to recognize it if I could wet it with my thumb, tilt it in various directions to a good light, and peer through a strong lens at it, if it's a stamp I've seen before.

Your family history is better than a brand name anyway.
