I am sure you are all aware that the forums here are HUGE. The server is getting bogged down and when ever someone does a search, in our larger forums, the server really takes a hit.

Well we are now coming to point where we will need to prune out older threads. I really hate to do this because there is some very valuable information contained in older threads. Not to mention I like seeing that we have X amount of posts!

But we must prune out the older threads.
This will need to happen over the next few weeks.

The result will be much faster loading forums and searches.

We need to save some of the old threads that are classics. What we will do is create a BFC Classic forum loaded with old threads that do not necessarily need to be replied to but offer valuable information.

You will be able to view the threads in that forum but you will not be able to post to them.

So what I need help on is a list of threads from Year 1 and this forum that you guys want to keep.

Here is what I need.
Go back through this forum and year one.
You can do this by doing a search or by going back manually by changing your settings to show posts dating back as far as you want to search.

When you find a thread that you think we should save in the classic forum, post the entire URL to that thread here on this thread.

It should look like this: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum32/HTML/003354.html

Please do not just give us the title to a thread or anything else. I need the URL.

Also we only need posts from this forum older than 45 days.

We will announce a date that this will end and then I will pick a random winner from this thread. The winner will get a Prototype Benchmade Stryker! If we get a lot of help I will add more knives as prizes.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mike, this may not make me any friends, but have you thought about telling everyone to find the old threads they want to keep for information and download those into Favorites in their individual PCs? The Forums are growing more every week and I see your need for trimming things, this might be a good solution.

Mike...

Another way around this is to bundle them up into .Zip format for download as regular Text...

This way is someone wants to go back to say All of January 1999 posts,,they can download the Zip, and read their brains out...

A library of Zips would be nice and you can fit a Ton of text into say a 1mb or 500K zip file!
Maybe even in Adobe Reader format then zipped...

Hows something like that sound ?

Interesting ideas. The only problem is that the files would not be searchable unless you have interal software that can do that.

But it would be a boatload faster if the threads are on your machine.

Man now you got me thinking.

I will test a download of year one and see how big the file is.

Mike and I didn't talk about this, and I've already got something working to help us out with this problem.

I'm locking this thread until Mike and I have a chance to get our heads together about this...
