when using the chakmak, do i use the curved side or the flat side? also, which way do I go? front to back or back to front?

how come it wont throw sparks on my firesteel? not made of carbon steel?

any help is appreciated.

I watched a couples of vids on youtube and I'm also curious what the experts here are going to say.

It's going to be informative :-)

I've read the chakmak is more to realign the edge than to sharpen it. It sure has some sharpening abilities but it doesn't have much grind.
Taking a blade from dull to sharp only with the chakmak would probably take a LOT of patience.

This little device seems to serve any small purposes you see fit when you don't want to damage your good blade.

The purpose of the chakmak is not to sharpen. It's function is to burnish the edge in the field between sharpening and to realign rolled edges.
