Sal, or anyone, I bought a VG10 Spydie Viele off a forumite a couple of weeks back. When it arrived, it was in very good condition, opened smoothly and the liner lock snapped in to place very easily and could be disengaged smoothly.
Just last night, I noticed the action was a little bit rougher than usual. May have been because of some dust from when I was in the workshop and using the knife to cut stuff (wood, plastic bags, rags, etc.) but of course I can't be sure.
I sprayed it out with heaps of lubricant but it didn't seem to help. The lube is a silicone based product from Helmar. I tried working it around a little but it only seemed to get worse. I decided to disassemble it and give it a thorough cleaning to make sure I hadn't picked up some metal slivers. But after the re-assembling the knife, the action was just as rough as before and now the liner is binding!
It feels as though the blade is grinding on the ball bearing. When opened normally (not snapping it open) the liner binds and is very hard to disengage. I'm guessing that it will bind even worse if I attempt to snap it open.
Before I make it any worse, I would like to get some advice on what I ought to do next. I would really like to send it back to Spyderco for some re-work or something to get it smooth again, but bearing in mind that I am in Australia, is there any alternative? Sal, should I send it back? Can I send it back? What is your policy on this? I did disassemble the knife.
Hope someone can give me some advice. Very sad but it now has to sit in the drawer. Was my favourite carry.
