Help w/ a new chopper

I think everyone can agree an axe and a machete are 2 totally different objects. That's like saying an apple or an orange.

Two different objects, but they both chop, and probably at least as well as one of the knives mentioned, but for a lot less money... :)

seriously i would go with Ontario RTAK or a Browning Crowell/Barker Competition Knife

and 3Guardsmen im not a fan of any sports, exept maybe the lumberjack competition :p

The Outcast is about $75. It has gotten great reviews. I would take it over the others

LOL:D Yeah, I was just trying to make a funny. I'll second your recommendation of the RTAK, since I have used one. I think, based upon reviews I've seen (I don't own one just yet), the Outcast would do a might fine job as well.

Ok, everybody chime in on what the best chopper is: RTAK I or II, Kershaw Outcast, or Ranger RD-9.

Out of those three, the Ranger RD9 is the best chopper. It has the needed weight, and the steel takes impacts much better than on those other two. And the RD9 has a superior warranty as well. It would be my choice every single time, out of those three.

I have been thinking of the Browniing but I never heard anyone say if they were happy w/ it or how it performed.

First, I don't own a Ranger, so I can't speak from personal experience. I'll leave this one to the people that own one.

As for the RTAK, I wouldn't buy anything from Ontario. Ever. Read this thread and you may agree.

As for the comment on the superior warranty of the Ranger, I'd have to ask how it compares to Kershaw's no-hassle lifetime warranty and free sharpening. And in my experience with the Outcast, the D2 does real well in taking impacts. Several 4 inch hardwoods have been "impacted" on the farm with nothing more than the desired results. To me, that's what a chopper is supposed to do.

And the Outcast is just a little more than half the price of the Ranger.
