Hey guys,

New here, looking for some help. I saw a thread a few weeks ago from a helpful user here that showed how Spyderco factory second blades are marked with a specific cut out, small but an indicator of the knife being a second (usually on the spine). I kind of forgot about it until I was looking at a knife I received in the mail literally today from a seller through Amazon of the Superleaf. I love the knife and I have no problems with it, but I noticed upon inspection that the mark I was looking at in those photographs is on the wire clip of the knife.

At first I thought I was unknowingly sold a factory second knife, which very well could be the case still. But now I'm thinking that the mark could be specific to the wire clip? I'll be pretty upset with this seller either way, but I'm hoping it's just the wire clip that is a second. I'd put some pics of it up but I don't have a camera that is capable of capturing the detail here with me at school, but trust me when I say it matches the typical factory second mark. My only real concern here is the warranty on Spyderco's end if I need help with it, and considering I paid over $100 for the knife I don't want any warranty issues at all.

Thanks for any insight you guys might have

Factory seconds are marked with a notch usually on the back side behind the opening hole. Can you post a pic?

Not one that clearly shows the notch. I've never seen it on the clip before either so that's why I'm wondering why it's there. Could just be a nick it picked up somehow during assembly but it looks so similar to those factory second notches. I'll try again to get a clear picture

I would think that the production costs of the wire clips were low enough that if one didn't pass inspection it would just get tossed in the trash.

If it looks like a tiny scratch, and there are a few of them spaced out along the clip, this is normal for the wire clip. As they bend them it happens. Won't affect strength or function.

Only one nick, literally looks like a knife lopped a tiny piece of steel out of the clip in one motion. I'm not concerned with it affecting functionality because it is very small, my real concern is if this marking signifies a factory second if I didn't swap it with a new one before sending to Spyderco if need be

Just checked my Superleaf and it has a slight indentation on the clip too which fits you description. I've tried taking pictures of it with my iPhone and it just won't show up clearly. Mine came from Cutlery Shoppe so the chances of it being a second are null. Rest easy OP, I'm sure your knife is first quality.

I had a sage 1 that had the same thing on the wire clip. It was purchased from a reputable retailer as well. Just the manufacturing process in my opinion. I'm thinking of getting a Superleaf as well. Would love to hear how you like it. Thanks!

I've had a Superleaf since they were first released. Out of all of my knives it easily gets the most pocket time.

It would be pointless to put a seconds mark on the clip because as you mention, the clip can just be exchanged. Plus they wouldn't put the mark in more than one place because a worker could overlook it, but not if it is always in the same place. The wire clip is made of, well, wire and it is fairly common for there to be defects in wire.

As Rycen said spyderco marks seconds with a small grinder mark on the top of the blade behind the opening hole. Another indicator would be that seconds do not come with the box.

It sounds like a very common thing with wire clips, and a nitpicking of sorts. Not a second and no need to panic. It is after all, a production knife that will soon be all but unavailable. Enjoy your knife, I own one and love it.
