Help...Wanting a Buck for me and my son.

I want to buy a buck knife for my son and me (2). He will soon be a teenager, but has been handling his responsibilities like a young man . We are moving to a small homestead place soon and though it would be a nice "coming of age" type gift.

I would like them to be folding pocket/sheath knives and both the same make and model. I like the single locking blades or possibly a barlow style knife(if buck makes/made one.

I want it to be made in the U.S.A., and good quality. A knife he can have a lifetime then hand down to his son. Does this mean I need to find a vintage kife? I am wanting two the same, so that makes finding older models harder. What about old/new stock. Anyone know a good provider. I want to stay loyal to buck as this was my first knife (stolen unfortunately) and was a good one, but I just can't buy a knife made in China

I have read many posts on this forum, and trust the opinions and advice from a lot here.

Thanks in advance.

BamaSpek First welcome and thanks for doing this for your son. You mentioned folding and sheath so depending on your son’s size I would go with a 110 larger or 112 medium. I think you could use the 112 easier than some with smaller hands could use a 110. You could even go with a 110 for you and a 112 for him. Good luck and lets us know what you find.

I agree, and have been looking at the 110's and some info on the different ones. I have still trying to figure out which would be the best for us...cost/value/quality.

Keep your eyes out for me would ya. :D

Well remember once you both get the addiction you’re going to need ones to use because they get scratched and ones to sit around look at hold and talk to.

Yes, welcome to the Buck Forum.

Your son is going to grow. Think ahead. Don't get some tiny something that fits him now when you are wanting something that will last him a life time.

A new 110 is less than $30 at Walmarts. Hard to go wrong with one of those, and all the 110's are USA made.

Something fun is finding a 110 or maybe a 112 that matches his birth year on the tang stamps.

I came up with a really nice 1992 112 for my Grandson and I have a 1992 110 that I am restoring for him as a pair.

So the Walmart 110's are a good quality knife and made in the U.S.?

Can the handles be engraved? Are they real wood?

Yes, the handles can be engraved if you find a good person to do the work and the handles are real wood.

I would also suggest looking at the Buck site and consider ordering a Custom Shop knife for each of you. Would get you factory engraving and if you stick with real wood would still be about $100 each. Not cheap but a bit more unique, more of a lifetime momento I think, and would let you get the SV30 steel if you prefer.

Something to consider.

I agree with Ohen, a Custom Shoppe 110 is always a good choice. Having said that, the best value I have seen is a Cabela's Alaskan Guide 110 available through Cabela's. The blade uses S30V steel and the inserts are what looks like cherry wood.

I recommend the S30V steel because it is tough, takes a great edge and keeps it for a long time. What is more important to me, is that you can sharpen the S30V with Arkansas stones.

Oh yes, welcome to the Buck forum!

Hard to argue against a standard 110, a good solid choice. If your budget will allow it, there are a lot of custom or semi-custom options. Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop both have a few. For your purpose, I think I would choose this Bass Pro version: BPS

If you want some alternatives, something a little different in size and design would be the Alpha Hunter or the Alpha Dorado. The Buck Mayo TNT is also a great knife, but they are a little expensive.

Tough choices, but that's half the fun.:)

Bama, I agree w/ Stockdog. I started my kids out on a 112 while I carry a 110. Then as they grew I introduced them to the 110. I'm making plans to do my grand kids the same way.I wish my folks had done me in this manner. DM

If your budjet cant go the custom shop way...Buck will still engrave a standard model at a reasonable cost...AND YOU GET A BOX FROM POST FALLS!!!!

What should I expect to pay for a custom"ish" 110 with a leather sheath and engraved?

Never mind...just found the site :o

Any suggestions on "must haves"?

It really depends on what you like, and how you plan on using it...

Blade steel... hard to go wrong with s30v

Shape... I like the Finger Groove model, others do not...

Bolsters... on a custom, go with nickel, it won't tarnish, and looks custom

Scales... this is personal preference... bone, antler, wood...

Since, you've indicated you plan on using them... think about a set of Cabela's Alaskan guides (posted here). And, once you use them for a while, get some customs for the Holidays :)
