Help! What do you call this type of sheath?

It is a belt sheath..you tuck the sheath into the belt or sash and the knob keeps it from going to far into the pants

VERY old school

This type of sheath is actually for both. In all likelihood it started out as a sheath to be used with a frog. Do a google search for a "sword frog" or "knife frog" and you should find some pics. It was basically a belt loop with a horizontal loop attached to it. The knife or sword sheath, which is separate would then rest inside the horizontal loop with the stud keeping the sheath in place. At some point people probably started skipping the frog and just began sticking the sheath in their belt with the stud keeping it in place. I have also seen belts with holes in them for these studs to fit into. The sheath would go between the belt and the wearer.

Frog systems are actually great for larger knifes since you can remove the sheath/knife from your belt easily without having to undo your belt.

I tried searching here on Baldeforums and couldn't find any good pictures. Here is a different kind of frog that doesn't use the stud to keep the sheath in place. Just imagine the stud instead of the bottom piece to hold the sheath in place.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I just thought there was a common name for this type of sheath. I was wondering what it was. I see a lot of these on bowies nowadays but without the frog. I think they're cool.

David, here's one I did a while back complete with a frog. The frog is the part that has a belt loop. The sheath comes out so you can remove your knife without taking your belt off.

I know what it's called. It's called "Well done!". It a very nice, straight forward sheath. Very classy looking. Who ever made it should be proud.

Great example there.

I'm working on a 7" Khukri and am thinking of doing a frog setup for it. Not sure yet.

here's an example of a "frog" (aka ble loop) and sheath - while the stud was at times used alone the frog is amuch more stable attachment:

I have also heard the sheath sans frog referred to by Bill Bagwell and Kenny Rowe as a "concealment" sheath that can be worn inside the waistband of your pants with just the handle sticking up.

Wild Rose,

Beautiful piece as always from you. I've never seen one with a keeper strap for the frog/sheath.

Very cool stuff  thanks for the pics guys. I always wondered how the sheaths missing the "belt loop " aka FROG :) were used. And the sheaths missing the loop containing the stud really had me befuddled  :D Thanks again...... " World Class Leather Work "
