Hi,
lately I´m getting interested in khukuris. Now I´m prepared to get one.
What would you recommend?
It should take some abuse, be a good chopper, if necessary a weapon. I plan to take it on my outdoor trips (which take place in the northern hemisphere).
So my focus is purely on functionality.

Hi Marcus.

How much wood do you want to chop, and how far are you going to carry this khuk in the woods?

18" AK or 16.5" CAK, maybe an 18" GRS. For an all-around chopper, stay in the 16-18" range.

I started with a Chiruwa AK, and its still one of my most functional. Plus you get two if it breaks. Most people say 18" and 28 oz are the max for belt carry on a hike. The 16.5" CAK is a comfortable carry and will chop with the best.

Just the wood for a nice fire. The hikes can be quite long, but a can carry it attached to the back pack.

Yo Markus,
I cant disagree with what Andy posted...although I wanted to..:D

My 15"AK gets the job done that I bought it for...BUT, for a dedicated camping tool I would go with a 16.5 CAK or an 18" AK...

Truly which Khukuri?? ppfftt GET ALL OF THEM!!!!!!;)

Certain unsavory characters around here have a preference for the 15-16" models when there's more walking and carrying than actual chopping planned. The Ganga Ram Special seems to be highly recommended, especially in this size.

If you are a fairly small guy get a 16.5" WWII. If you are a fairly large guy get an 18" WWII.

Almost but not quite as heavy as an AK but more lively. My favorite khuk is an 18" WWII. (At least in part since Uncle Bill selected it for me!)

15in AK.

There's a reason it is the most popular model.

Nice of you to join us. Come back soon.

Good advice by everyone. 15" Ang Kola, 16.5" Chiruwa Ang Kola (my first), or 16.5" WWII model are all good. They are portable enough to carry, and chop better than most an non-khukuri knife of the same length.

Welcome!

Steve

Just to throw in some confusion, a BAS is ~15" and I absolutely love the design for a hiker. Of the smaller knives I think the BAS has a nice sized handle too.

Lets not forget the mighty 15" Pen knife! I gave that baby quite a workout and it was a real chopper and easy to handle.

The 15" BAS is quite nice, as is the 16.5" WWII. I took my new WWII out for its first workout this afternoon; it didn't disappoint.

My vote is one of the WWII models. 16.5 or 18". My favorite all around khuk for abuse and camping is my 18" WWII made by Kumar.

First: I am savory.

Second: If you have to walk with the thing, the long knives get proportionately heavier.

Third: Look up the khukuri dynamics thread link at the top of the Forum under Tips, etc.

Fourth: Some of these guys are Herculean in proportion, and I think they take steroids, and maybe even are from other galaxies, or maybe even zombies.

Nice to have you here.

. . .

Savory: pleasing to the taste or smell

He's trying to draw in those vampires. :D

By any standard other than us khuknuts, a 15" overall knife over 1/4" thick is BIG. Any khukuri of that size can cut any wood you are likely to ever need when camping and can be batoned through 8" plus logs.

Welcome Markus,

You're unlikely to find the one perfect "do everything" knife that is the holy grail of knife enthusiasts. So why limit yourself to one? Get a big chopper for the times you need a big chopper, a smaller, lighter, khuk to carry on the trail, and a good 3 1/2 to 4 inch blade belt knife like a KPH/Sarge or JKM for cutting everything else.

My two cents, start with the belt knife and work your way up from there. Depending on the type of outdoor activities you participate in, you may find that you don't need one of the really big heavy choppers, that a smaller khuk will handle it.

If you no joke, plan on getting just one (good luck), go with the 15" AK, but pull out the karda and chakma and in their place insert an SAK and a small Mora knife, or some other compact fixed blade of your preference. Good to go. ;)

p.s.: Excuse me guys, but Kis is savory? I'll just have to take y'all's word on that

Nothing of value to add that hasn't already been said regarding khuk choice....but I'm glad I'm not the only one who was disturbed by Kis's announcement:p  :D

Another vote for the 15" AK, whose possible use as a weapon is understated...they ARE pointier than WWII's.

Uh, maybe instead of "unsavory" Kis meant "unshaven". Most people in this joint have a beard- on some it goes up to the eyebrows... all right, I'm joking, but I knew a guy that shaved his forehead. For real, he looked like a yeti.
