Help with 10/22 please!

I've just (for the first time) taken apart, cleaned and reassembled my Ruger 10/22. Now I find that the safety won't go to "safe" the red button is always showing and I can dry fire no matter how I push it.

edit: it only seems to happen after a dry fire and when I haven't yet worked the action.

Gun has to be cocked for the safety to work.

you have to cock it to be able to put it on safe.
