Im having a conundrum. Im moving back to montana and will be spending a good amount hunting and camping. Have a hatchet, folding saw, antique cattaragus with a 6 in blade and a opinel gardening knife (8, stainless steel, drop point). My issue is the cattaragus is too dang big for most of my needs, i dont baton, i use the hatchet and saw for that. Im thinking i want a knife with a 4 in blade. I like old fashioned stuff so the opinel 10 or a mora 1 is what im looking at getting. Which one would be better for general camp use?

They're both solid brands and excellent value. Personally I think it comes down to whether you prefer folding or fixed blade.
I think you've identified the perfect excuse to buy both :)

Welcome to the forum :).

I'm partial to Moras, as I find that their grind really excels at general wood carving tasks. I also like how it is really easy to sharpen because the bevel is so wide. I also just like fixed blades for outdoor work, they're easier to maintain, to clean, and are less likely to break or go missing.

The opinels are great though. They slice excellent, and the #10 is probably going to be a better food prep knife.

The upside is they are both excellent choices, and extremely low cost, so you may be able to indulge yourself and get both and see which one works better for you. Although since you already have the 8, I'd keep that handy and pick up the Mora.

... they're cheap enough you could buy both for around $30... buy both for around $30....you won't regret it...

That was you're subconscious speaking.

I'd take the Mora over the Opinel, both are great but a fixed blade is just more convenient, in my opinion. Plus you already have the #8.

While both are great slicers, the Mora 1 is a fixed blade while the Opinel is folding. For hunting and camping, I would suggest a fixed blade. Perhaps even go up to a Mora Companion as Travis suggested.

I will add that the mora high q robust is the same knife as the companion hd for $5 less. It's gray and blue instead of black and green. Just really excellent knives.

I'm going to agree with Stargawker, stick with a fixed blade. Mora Stainless Companion, Marttiini Timberjack, or a Condor Bushlore if you want something with a full tang. I have all three and they are all wonderful knives, all extremely affordable too.

I hadn't seen that Martinni. Thanks. Is that a Condor collaboration? I sure like my Martinnis.

Thanks for the input guys! Probably gonna be the mora 1 or the 611. Not sure if i want the guard or not, not worried bout my hand slipping, im going to texture the the handle and fill any holes with epoxy

I love my Mora no1, it's cuts very well and I live the traditional look. I carry it while fishing and huntjng often.

Truth be told though, when I foresee heavy use, I grab my Mora Companion. Almost identical to the no1 but with a very comfortable rubber handle.

I avoid going into the woods without a fixed blade of some kind, so for me I would skip the Opinel except as a backup.

I have the smaller Mora 2/0. The advantage of that type of handle is the ease with which different grips can be used. No guards get in the way. That is very helpful in wood carving.

Love moras and Opinels. Tuff decision for sure. I'm not a fan of the #1. While the handle looks cool is not practical and IMO you could do better. Look at the companion.

For what its worth, while I am pretty confident about my skills handling a blade, ill always want a lower guard "just in case". Doesn't have to be anything huge, but I prefer some sort of guard there.

I quite like my companion in carbon. The handle is very well shaped, and the grip is secure. The marttini timberjack is also very similar, and is worth a look.

Good luck with whatever you do :).
