I was sick of my dad's junky knives so I gave him this one. He says it feels too big in the pocket, and rides too high.

I was thinking of getting him a spyderco caly 3 Damascus. Now I'm thinking he won't like the back lock.
Any ideas of a low ride liner lock or frame lock for around $200? I plan on having it engraved.
Gotta be sweet!

How hard does your father use his knives?, Does he have a size preference or any blade length restrictions?

He also said he likes a knife that he could grip in his fist to make a punch more solid. Just in case. He had a Gerber before, that he said he could do this with.

Buck Vantage? Very slim, easy to carry, solid lock, and very low in pocket carry. The select model should not run you more than 25 bucks, if you want to get into s30v it's more expensive.

Okay how about something like the Mcusta Mc-1. Linker lock, deep carry clip and the blade length is within his preference. Another good option is the Sage series from Spyderco, the Sage 2 is a frame lock and the Sage 1 is a liner lock with nice cf laminate scales. Both are light have deep carry clips and cost under or around 200. The Benchmade 300 flipper might also work. All of these blades are under 200 dollars but I would also like to suggest you take a look at the Spyderco Southard. Its a bit bit bigger (blade length of around 3.5 inches) and pricier (approx 250 on BladeHQ) but you might be able to snag a good deal on the exchange. It offers a lot of knife for its price point and could satisfy your fathers knife needs for years to come. The Benchmade 940 is another knife I would make the case for, Lightweight, Well balanced and a strong lock. You can ask for a low riding clip from Benchmade and they will happily oblige the request. The blade shape and length aren't for everybody though and it comes in only one colour (dark green). I am quite biased towards the 940 so take what I say with a grain of salt :P.

Wow that mcusta is sweet! I haven't heard much of them. I'll be looking into that for sure. Thank you for the options I haven't considered.

I was thinking a Spyderco Dragonfly II would be grand for his uses, FRN is the handle I'd choose, but many love G10 and stainless. Pretty well proven knife that's ideal for a minimalist. It's a lock back however, but a reliable, probably boring choice.

I was going to suggest the techno in my original post but the blade length was a bit shorter so i excluded it. In hindsight I should have included it it's a pretty cool little knife. Frame lock, 2.5 inch blade length, a really nice deep carry clip, great blade steel and a solid reassuring feel to the knife. Its a bit heavy for the size but it feels beefy and robust and would definitely help your dad punch like Mike Tyson. The shorter blade length also might be a beneficial thing if your dad has coworkers who freak out knives, definitely looks modern but not outlandish.

Looks like we have a winner! Spyderco techno it is. Oh wait. Made in Taiwan, Doh! May take him awhile to realize that they make good knives now.

how about a piranha body or mini gaurd??? if you can legally tote that kind of thing.
if not, how bout a buck 55 Damascus, hard to find but are one of the best engraveable knives to give...... gave one to my gram-pa for his 72 bday. got his name engraved the brass and an etching of his hunting dog on the blade as well as the costumed sheath i made for it, almost made him break down & cry

I say the Sage 2 or Techno.
They're made in Taiwan but they're amazing quality and materials.
The fit and finish as well as the overall build are great.
He'll know that once he holds one.
Also, explain that it's a USA Company, they just have some knives made over seas to lower prices.
He'll appreciate them once he realizes how well made they are and he'll love that it came from you.

I think I'm leaning towards the caly 3 Damascus again. Only because it will be a collector and someday it will be mine. And come on, that damascus is SWEET! :)

Lol it is an awesome and beautiful knife.
I used to have one.
I used mine, but I would get him something that he's more inclined to use.
Something that will make a great all around EDC for him.
