Help with a folder...

Okay, so about 6 months ago I bought myself an Emerson CQC-8 for general use. It's a great knife, and I love it, however the knife is a bit big for an edc folder (imo), and when I get my Game Warden back I plan on carrying that as well, so I really just need something utilitarian, with maybe a 3-3.5" blade.

I'm not a fan of the Spyderco aesthetic, so that's not really an option for me. Nor am I really feeling many of Kershaw's designs (leek, chive, etc...), so I'm hoping some of you more versed in the world of folding knives can help me figure out what I should look at. I already have my EKI up for trade, and may just go ahead and post it for sale if I can figure out what I'd like to replace it with.

Awhile back I got my father a Kershaw JYD and he LOVES that little knife. I'm thinking something in that size-range would be pretty good, as it is infinitely more pocketable than the large CQC-8.

I'd like to know what assisted-openers are out that are quality knives. I like the look of the CRKT/Elshewitz offerings, but I've read some mixed reviews.

Also, I'd like for the blade to be partially serrated. I find that I like that feature in a utility-type knife. If I REALLY need great slicing, I should have my GW with me.

Thanks for the help.

Jason

How about a CQC-14? The blade is less than 3", but it's very comfortable and feels like it was designed for utility.

The benchmade 930 Kulgera is a great knife and i believe it is what you are looking for, but i am not shure if it has serrations or not

The CRKT M16 and M21 knives are tough little workhorse knives. They are both great values for the price.

gatman, you sound like an al mar man to me! their fit and finish are as good as spyderco but designs are different. check out the al mar Nomad for a smaller folder or maybe the ultralight series. -CB

added- MINI SERE TOO! (saw one on the exchange today)

I'd stay away from the CRKT M16. Do a search on them and you'll find that, as of late, the quality coming from Columbia River's factories is declining steadily.

I would recommend the Benchmade Mini-Dejavoo, which is in the blade length you're searching for and is also available in partial serrations, but, unfortunately, has the Spyderco opening hole that I'm assuming you don't like. Al Mar does make quality knives (I very much like my Ultralight Talon), and other Benchmade products such as the 960 and 930 get the thumbs-up in my book too. Good luck.

Hey, Bro! Chuck Gedraitis just made me a folder, right to my specs! I love it and the price was very reasonable. You might want to think about a Custom. :)

Staying away from CRKT, thanks. Not a big fan of Kershaws, but I can respect them. I'm thinking more along the lines of Benchmade and above. The Nomad looks pretty cool. Gonna check out Chuck's site, as well.

Thanks, guys. Remember, Don't let Chucks Fancy Stuff mislead you. He made my folder with Micarta and A-2. It's the nicest folder I own. I'm almost afraid to use IT!!

Ummm...you can't say this and not show pics, Lycosa.

Ahhh! I knew that was coming!! I'm setting up to do pix this week-end! Chuck would be glad to show you a pic. Let me see if I can pull that pic up from the Custom Forum!
