Hello gents ( and ladies ),

I need a little bit of help, if you don't mind.

I'm getting married in less than a month and I have been searching for a nice knife to purchase as gifts for my groomsmen ( my father and cousin ). Neither of them have really ever been EDC kinda guys, but that probably has a lot to do with the fact that neither of them has really ever had a nice knife. Dad has an old Buck lockback piece of junk that doesn't take an edge and wouldn't hold it even if it did. He's retired, but he and I often do things outdoors and he does a lot of things where a knife would come in handy. ( not to mention he's getting older and due to some recent events, I'd like for him to start carrying a blade ) Cousin lives in Oregon and works as a chef and at a high end seafood market. I'm sure he appreciates the qualities of a good blade, but I just don't think he's ever spent the time or money looking for a decent carry folder.

So, here's where I stand on it. I would like to get them something that looks good ( neither are gonna want something too "tactical" ), but I also want something that is more practical than the average "gentleman's" folder. I would like to completely avoid slipjoints, and while I don't hate lockbacks, I would lean more toward a liner/frame/AXIS type lock.

Price range is probably the biggest limiting factor in that I would prefer not to spend more than $100 each. I'm looking for a knife with decent steel that holds a good edge. Blade length between 3.25" and 4". Handle material doesn't necessarily matter. I'd like for it to have a decent visual appeal, but of course price excludes much aesthetic flair. My EDC is a Benchmade 710 M2, which I love, but I didn't want to get them the same style of knife that I have, not to mention I hate that the less expensive model is in D2, which, in my experience, is a horrible knife steel.

So far, I had considered a few different Mcusta blades ( a few come with a Damascus style blade and Cocobolo or Ebony handles ) as well as the CRKT Ripple ( I really like the IKBS as well as the way it looks ).

If anyone can give me some more recommendations, I would greatly appreciate it. If you have any suggestions, please also let me know where I can go to purchase them, as well. Thanks for any help you can offer, as I need to go ahead and purchase these as soon as possible.

Have a great day!!

Jester

PS--one more question ( this one is for me ).........a few years ago I was looking into buying one of the Lone Wolf autos ( the T2 Harsey or T3 Tactical ). I really loved that they could be opened with the thumb stud or with the hidden release button under the scale. Well, I kinda got out of knife collecting for a while and now I see that Lone Wolf doesn't really exist like they did before. So, does anyone know where I might get my hands on one of these?

BM940, or Sage1. Take your pick.
Both: S30V, great carry, excellent ergos, good looking, high quality.
The BM can be a bit more than $100, but you can get pretty good discounts on them from a couple sites.
I'd look at cutleryshoppe.

How about the Kershaw Speedform 2? It's the right size, not too tactical, liner lock, and has a steel that you aren't likely to find anywhere near that price elsewhere.

get some allox Swiss Army Knives and have their initials engraved on them.

I will bat second on the swiss army. Get them decent ones with a philips, awl, saw, scissors, can opener tweezer/toothpick and maybe a couple other options. Don't get ones too big, just the tools mentioned.
A lot of guys won't carry a "knife" but will carry a sak. Everyone usually goes for victorinox but I prefer wenger's as there micro serrated scissors with the solid tension bar vs victorinox's crappy scissor spring are far superior. I have been using a wenger for close to 20 years and the scissors are still sharp and can cut leather.

Also get them a reasonably inexpensive small fenix(or similar) that takes regular AAA or AA batteries. Every guy loves flashlights and with the sak/flashlight combo your giving them what everyone should have in their vehicle.

I gave them to my groomsmen and told them to leave it in the glovebox if they are not going to carry it. They all still have and use them, my brothers threw theirs in the tackle box as they never seem to have a light or knife in their boats when we are out.

Regards and stand firm on any well meaning wifely "changes" to your hobbies, time spent with friends etc. Anything you give up in the first couple years will become written in stone in her mind, "Now that were married....."
Things relax after that while you both have figured things out.

Any Spyderco with a stainless handle is perfect for engraving. I gave my groomsmen enduras with their initials and the date engraved on the handle.

I was reading this thread earlier and it seems applicable(along with a whole lot of others): http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/700265-A-quot-Gentleman-Badass-quot-Folder

I second the leek. There are a lot of interesting combos out there that would look cool engraved. Also: buck 110. It is a backlock but you could get a custom engraved one with S30V and purrty wood scales for less than $100 a pop. as for the lone wolfs (which are awesome and many are very classy), i don't know much about the 'net shops but my local knife shop has at least 20 brand new or unused automatics in stock (the originals). they're all priced in the $200-$350 range if i remember correctly but when he saw me looking at 'em he immediately offered to take $50 off the price. that probably means i could get even more knocked off. dunno. I''ll take a picture next time i'm there if you're interested. the old lone wolfs were really cool, weren't they?

these are probably out of your price range but talk about functional beauty:

Buck TNT and or the Waimea....Titanium frame lock with BOS S30V steel. You can't go wrong!

May I recommend Spyderco Carbon Caly 3, a bit over 100 and a tad under your 3.25" min., but all class. Besides, it boasts an exotic steel.
