help with a rift

Picked up a rift today, and I love it. Takes a little getting used to going from a skyline carried tip down to this tip up.

My question is that I carry in my hip pocket. The thumbstud is catching on the way out on carhartt type pants and acting as a wave. While that seems like a good thing on the surface, it really is not what I have in mind.

I want to lower the right thumb stud or replace it with something lower and more round. Does anyone have a suggestion?

I am new to nicer folding knives and Benchmade specifically, so please assume you are talking to a rank amateur.

Thanks for the help.

I know it is not what you are asking, but I carry Rift in right front pocket, all the way to right. The thumb stud never catches my pocket this way.

If may work well for you. If you are concerned about protruding handle, you should change the clip to 810/275 version of deep carry pocket clip. It works for me.

(It is HK14715, not Rift. But would be very similar.)

It just does not work well for me to carry in a front pocket. I would like to get a deep carry clip like the one on the contego though.

I have my Rift in front of me. I don't see a way to remove the studs but Benchmade must have put them on somehow. I don't think the studs are press fit. Screwed in maybe but if I am wrong you will mar the studs.
EDIT: But I have noticed what you are talking about. I hasn't happened to me yet.

I would guess they are screwed together through a hole in the blade, but I have no idea. I don't mind filing or grinding, but I don't want to jack up the blade.

They unscrew. Look at the end and you can see a (probably) T6 or some other size torx. I really don't know if they can be removed and modified much. One side is male and the other female. The male section goes (be mature) really deep into the female section. You need something like a Sebenza, only a stud on one side. Good luck and post back your decision/results.

No torx slot. The knurling on the outside would be a perfect thing for a little custom wrench to grab. I would bet they use something like that. The stud is pretty tall and has a her deep dished center. In my mind, I think I could take it down to to bottom of that dish and then radius the outside edge.

The issue would be refinishing that raw metal.

Does anyone make aftermarket studs for this knife, or any knife for that matter?

Have you contacted Benchmade? They may be able to send you a stud to work on and that way not have any chance of marking the knife up.
All they can say is no and the call is free. Give them a try before you work on you existing knife and let us know how it works out.
Frank.

I'm not sure if the rift has enough to grab onto but...

Wrap two pairs of pliers in duct tape. Firmly grip each side of the stud. Twist in opposite directions.

All the Benchmade thumb studs I have are screw together. If you wrap the plier heads first, the surface shouldn't be marred.

The Rift uses Benchmade’s large (throw) studs. Most models use a stud removable with a QUALITY T6. Rift studs are different and can easily be removed with a 3/16 inch ratchet. It’s a perfect fit. Place the 3/16 inch ratchet over the stud and carefully turn counter clockwise. You will want to place masking/duct tape over the jaws of a pair of pliers to hold the opposing stud. A quick twist will break the loc-tite and unscrew the studs as they screw into each other.

I use two 3/16 inch ratchets (one for each stud) to eliminate the pliers. I then use a smaller stud found on a large Griptilian, 710 and the like. They will fit right in the hole and can be secured with one or two QUALITY T6 drivers. Cheap T6 drivers will break off in the stud.

You can buy a quality 3/16 ratchet and T6 Torx driver at ACE Hardware.

Definitely using that trick to get them off of mine. A bit of rust color has developed underneath that I need to get in to .
I've had in it wave out of my pocket as well. Usually on accident, sometimes I can get it perfect. Other times it just half opens.

I was not expecting it and have a nice slice in a shirt. Oooops. On the bright side, it is sharp.

I think I will try to reprofile the studs first.

Does anyone make an aftermarket clip like the 810?

No aftermarket studs?

Just grind down the one that catches and causes the blade to open.

Just call Benchmade and ask for a deep carry clip. They'll mail you one for free. You could also ask STR to make one, or a couple of the knife making suppliers (bing/google for knife making supplies) have titanium clips that will work.

Had the same issue w/ mine, catching T stud on pocket when drawn. Swapped out the for "common" studs found on the 710, Grips and such, did the trick.

Doc is correct, 3/16 socket, it may take two....one on each side. A small investment for the hobby, save from mauling your hardware.

BM, will gladly send you the studs and clip you desire....wont take your money even if you try...BM CS...Legendary

Redman,

Call BM and tell them what is going on and ask if they will send you standard thumb studs for say like a BM 551 Griptilian. If they will not, let me know and I'll gladly send you a smaller set of BM studs off of a Griptilian that you can use to replace your factory Rift ones. I love the Rift studs and like to have them on a lot of my BM's so I have extra "other studs".

BM has sent me Rift studs in the past when I lost half of one while messing around with this kind of thing. They are great folks.

Thanks for the info. I am going to call BM. If that does not work, I will take you up on the offer of a trade of studs.

Thanks all.

Now, if I could just get the tip up vs tip down muscle memory down right.

To hijack my own thread, how do people adapt between them? I keep fumbling around. For the most part, it is not an issue, but working around livestock and ropes, the last thing you need to do is fumble a knife when you NEED it.

Anyway, thanks again for the help!
