Help with a small tomahawk

Well, I have the CS Trail Hawk, it's handle is a little long for my hunting bag. I can cut it, but then I lose velocity on my swings. I saw the Camp and Hunter Hawks from Allen on Ragnar's website but they are out.

But, he does have the British Camp hawk, very cool. I was thinking about buying it to replace my Trail hawk and then trimming down my Trail Hawk for field carry.

Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

I think your plan is good as-is. :) As an alternate though, I'll suggest replacing the Trail Hawk with a Frontier Hawk and cut it down. It's a little heavier so the shorter handle does not cost much in chopping power. Mine is cut to 13" from the bottom of the handle to the closest edge of the head and it is still a very good chopper. I do have a Trail Hawk, and while I like the design I find just too light for anything more than a defensive-type role (it's fast in the hand).

Fort Turner's Pup Hawk is pretty close to those specs. Excellent quality (both hawks and sheaths), good price and fast service. Here is a pic of it mounted on my back quiver. OAL - 14", 1 lb and 2.75" cutting blade. Skinner

Very nice set up !!!

Thanks Dusty!

My back quiver is now just about set up for everything needed in the field. Along with the hawk I just added, it has a built in sheath for my hunting knife, ceramic sharpening rod and file to sharpen my broadheads. The accessory pocket carries my licence, extra string, extra tab and a couple screw in hooks (for hanging bows, quivers, jackets, ect.)

I used to carry one of those wire/cable saws to split the pelvis. But if it was an older animal, the rib cage was too much to split with my knife so I would have to carry a little gerber folding saw as well. Now I can do both jobs with the little hawk plus use it to make blinds, clear shooting lanes, ect.
