Could you please help with the approximate age and value of this #1 8" with Heiser sheath. Pics should best describe it.
Sheath is a little stiff and keeper strap missing with only the brass rivet. Tip of knife is a bit rounded. Sheath is also left handed (does this lower the value?).

Also, how should I care for this sheath. Flap for stone pocket is showing signs of cracking. Should I try and condition it or should I just leave it alone.

Thanks,
Jon

Hi here are some links to help ID knife as to age http://www.randallcollector.com/index.html

Looking at some old pictures of a Randall from the 1946 era I had the brass nut and washer on yours may put it in the late 40's'
But as we know when there putting together knives it all depends on what parts are pulled out of the box back then. Sheath and stone say 50's to me.
I think the stone is newer than knife or replacement. Sheath may even be newer than knife just a guess here.
As to value looks very rough may be worth sending to Randall for refinish job. It would bring the value up on it.
As to $$$ you need a collector that wants it to tell you that.
All this is just my opinion.

Nice Old Number 1. I am not sure of the stone being original either. I would not have the knife cleaned by Randall if I were selling it. Some Collectors like the crisp clean new look and some like the been there done that look. If your keeping it, sending it to Randall would depend on where you fall in catagories. Randall does do a very nice job refinishing their old knives.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if its a keeper or one that I may eventually sell , so i'll probably keep it as it.

Any suggestions as to how to care for the sheath?

Aloha,
Jon

Mauix, The sheath , except for the missing strap, seems to be fairly good shape. You do need to keep it with the knife as it will help to verify the age of the knife.
As for the care of the leather I would suggest s few coats of a good leather conditioner such as Chlesea Leather Food or Picards.
I use the Chelsea Leather food in my shop and find that it works very well. Several light coats several days apart will usually work very well. If you can't find any of the conditioners give me a call or e-mail me at my shop address and I'll hook you up with some. Greg
