so what's the deal with alloy percentages? for instance: http://ajh-knives.com/metals.html says that A-2 generally has 1% carbon, 0.60% Manganese, 5.25% Chromium, 1.10% Molybdenum, and 0.25% Vanadium. that adds up to 8.2%, which leaves 91.8% unaccounted for. either that or i'v got this really wrong.... lol

Steel is melted to be within a range of each element to be able to be called A-2 for example . Usually the composition listed is nominal [~ average for each element]. Then there is a specific composition for each batch of steel. So for A-2 nominal is 1.00 C, .60 Mn, .25 Si, 5.00 Cr, .25 V, 1.00 Mo...Range is .95- 1.05 C, .40-.85 Mn, .10-.40 Si, 4.75-5.25 Cr,.15-.50 V, .90-1.15 Mo.....And since we are talking about steel any "missing" percentage is Iron !!!!
