Help with an old buck blade. Hey Joe!

Howdy folks, got kind of an oddball, but I think this is an older Marbles safety folder with a Buck blade. I'm guessing this is from the 1930's, but this looks like it's aged together. I think this might be an original blade replacement done by Hoyt Buck. Just looking for a little information.

I think Joe Houser and Chuck Buck have seen this knife before, so I'd love some input if you're reading this Joe.

Thanks,

Tex in Idaho

WOW!!! That's interesting. I will be watching this thread to see what becomes of this story.

Interesting folder for sure! :thumbup::thumbup:

These are the kind of knives that I would love to know all it's history.

You may be better off emailing Joe because the folks from Buck aren't around here much anymore.

I checked Buck's website hoping to get an email for him, but no luck. I'll message him directly through the forum, hopefully he'll get it.

Well, if these guys have already seen your knife, what happened to the transfer of their opinions? DM

I posted his email under stumps post... Have a look...

Good luck... BTY, So what did Joe tell you about it before...

Can you confirm that the grind is a flat sabre grind and not hollow from the shoulder to the edge?

If it's from the 30s, does anybody know if Hoyt would have been using a belt or rotating stone to grind the blade and if was likely powered by electricity (as opposed to pedal or water)?

Really cool knife. Thanks for posting.

WOW! If i ever saw that knife before, i think i would have remembered it. Super cool! It sure looks like a genuine reblade from back in the 40's or 50's. We don't know when Hoyt started doing reblades or when it was stopped...or if Al did any. All i can saw about the Marbles, if that is what it is, is that i have always been especially fond of that brand and to see a knife that marries 2 great knife brands, it just really cool to me! Thank you so much for sharing the pictures!

Very cool knife! What is going on with the smaller "blade"? Is it a broken blade or broken bottle/can opener?

TAH,

Just speculating but I'll wager that "blade" is a "blade cover", sort of like an extension to the knife's frame. Doesn't look like that blade will fit into that frame.

Just a guess.

That's probably a good guess, pinnah. In the second photo, it looks like the end of that "blade" is nicely finished off. I'm not familiar with this style of knife.

TAH- That is not a second blade but instead a blade guard. The blade is longer than the handles on this model of Marbles knife so it has a folding extension that covers the blade when it is in the closed position. The extensions also folds in on the knife when the blade is in the open position. Hence the name Marbles Safety Folder - They also used this idea on their axe's known as the Marbles Safety Axe.

The original versions of the Marbles Safety Folder is highly sought after by Marbles collectors and usually bring a fairly good price. Within the last few years the Marbles Safety Folder has been reproduced in China.

Quite an interesting pair on this knife, Marbles and Buck. This would make a great conversation piece in ones collection.
