I purchased a couple of machetes, or so called 'bush axes' represented as having been surplus from the Dominican Republic military a few years back. They have been luxuriating in my basement shop--heated and air conditioned--but in short they have both developed a lot of rust, one of them is totally covered in an even coating of rust. I am wanting advice on how to approach restoring these blades surfaces, I may need to re-handle one also, but I'll skin that cat if I can get the rust handled.

Thanks for any advice/input

Wire brush on a bench grinder. Sometimes there will be spots that you can't get to with this method. So I have a twisted wire brush for an angle grinder layed in. Haven't had occasion to use it yet.

Wire wheel on an electric grinder my good man. Aside from a usable edge (which you won't get with a wire wheel) who really cares what the rest of the implement looks like. They're used for hacking thick grass, vines and thickets and whether they're all 'shined-up' for church service, to impress the girlfriend or e-bay, or actually being used, makes no difference.

Thanks folks, I guess I'll be busting out the wire wheels and going to work on 'em. I was kind of curious if anyone had experience with that Rust O'leum rust reformer stuff. Anyways I appreciate those tips.

If totally rehandling them then you could always run them through electrolysis, but other than that the good ol' wire wheel or steel wool will do the trick.
