Help with bowie handle

So im tring my first hidden bowie style knife with a acrew on pommel and it hit me as i was shaping the blade. How do you get a big rectangular block of wood round? Cut it down some? Grind the whole thing? Kind of unsure whats the best method.

I would use my rasp. It's not an actual wood rasp, it's a horse hoof rasp, but it'll hog off wood and homemade micarta like nothing else. Of course, my belt sander is just an old handheld clamped upside down, it doesn't work real fast, maybe a good one would be faster than mine.
