A friend is selling his Colt Detective revolver to me, is there anything I should know about before proceeding to buy his handgun? Any specific laws against it- or just keep it private between us, sort of out the door sale?

In Kali "Private sales" still have to go through an FFL holder. You and the seller both go to the gunshop, and the sale is "brokered" by the dealer.

FFL?

So that means, we have to go to an authorized third party just to make the thing official? Damn, it's pretty much like getting married huh?

Yes, you could say it's "like getting married" I guess, only the state is not likely to ban your wife and force you to turn her in or face a lengthy prison sentence because they know you have her. :D

most dealers will charge a handling fee, and a dealer record of sale fee (dros). the dros is normally $35. the handling fee may vary.

if it were given to you, say as a gift or inheritence, there is doj paperwork that would complete the transfer without going through an ffl. the doj fee is $25.00 iirc.

then there is the ten day wait.

Federal Firearms License. Basically, a licensed gun broker, such as a gun shop. Yeah, in CA technically any transfer between private parties has to use someone with an FFL as an intermediary. Lame.

Some places do charge some kind of dressed up extra fee for ppt. But I'd avoid a place that charges an extra fee, they're being a little shady and trying to squeeze a little bit extra out of you. By law ppt transfer fees should be no more than $35.

You'll also need to get a handgun safety certificate. Just take an easy multiple choice test and pay $25(not sure if the price is correct. Only valid for three years:barf: . They already had a written safety test in place, the BFSC, that was good for a lifetime. Still waiting on my refund for that now useless piece of paper :p .

The gift clause Morimotom refers to involves a parent or grandparent giving a gun to a child or grandchild.

although that was the original intent, there is a checkbox for "other". i used that once when transferring a gun to another party. it was transferred in the doj database and i never received a notice for a dros.

i dont know if it is totally kosher, but it worked when we did it. i dont know if that loophole is still available.
