Can anyone tell me about this knife (age, type of steel etc...)?
I'm thinking about restoring it, is it better to leave it as is or make it "like new" including sharpening?
Should I send it back to case for this or do it myself?
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I agree an early knife. The steel is Case's CV (chrome vanadium) with chrome plating. The plating flakes off with use exposing the CV blade steel.

When in doubt, don't do a thing!

One thing I learned from watching Antiques Road show is when you "clean it up", you destroy the value. Just wipe it down with an oiled cloth and keep it dry. More old kives and old guns have been ruined by shining it up.

To me it also looks like what is called a Finn. It came with a sheath. The only thing about Case fixed blade marks I know is that it's hard to date by them unless you know :) It's not in the greatest shape for a collector. I'd clean up the blade with Flitz, wax or oil the handle, make a simple sheath and use it. I got a similar knife by Western as a Boy Scout and they are very useful as a camping knife and its small enough to be unobtrusive and not catch on anything.
